Today we had our first full day working in the hospital in the morning and in the clinic in the afternoon. In the hospital Katie saw 2 kids with newly diagnosed cancers. A 10 year old with medulloblastoma and a 2 year old with Hodgkin's lymphoma that presented as a lump in the groin. They do the chemotherapy at the hospital across the street so these kids are waiting for transfer there. She also saw the Gower's sign for the first time in a boy with muscular dystrophy. Per usual, she looks like a baby genius on rounds. I have been seeing lots of babies with kwashiorker (malnutrition) and quite a few babies with VSD (heart defects). I also had the opportunity to add to the differential diagnosis on an 18 month old with chronic cough ... read more

We checked in, dumped our bags then headed out to check out Windhoek… it didn’t take long, the CBD is very small. We walked up a street to a famous german church and on the way walked past a street market of touristy goods, a bunch of women were there selling figurines and jewellery, they are called the Himba and wear mud over their bodies and have amazing hair, with almost like thick dreadlocks and wear thick necklaces. We walked down Independence ave, the main street and down a shopping mall. We had lunch in an Italian restaurant and had nice pizzas. We bought dinner from pick and pay, the supermarket nearby. That night we went to bed early, very tired from not a proper nights sleep the night before on the bus, but our room ... read more

Greetings to our Family and Friends from Africa! I’m sorry to have taken so long to communicate with you but each day has been so filled to the brim with adventures that I have fallen into bed immediately each night. Internet access is also hard to come by as well. Where to begin….mere words cannot possibly describe what we have experienced however I shall try. After a 22 hr. journey, we arrived safely in Johannesburg, tired but excited. We stayed in a lovely hotel that night, and the mother of a friend came to pick up one of our suitcases, which we were leaving behind, in which we had packed our clothes for the wedding we are attending. When we were about to check our other suitcase for the flight to Windhoek, Namibia, Gerry realized that ... read more

We left Etosha. I was sad to leave the beautiful watering hole where I found nothing but peace and quiet. I didn’t get to see my rhinos yet, but I hear I will have plenty of opportunities the 2nd ½ of my trip. We arrived in Windhoek to find that there is absolutely nothing to do in this town besides go to the mall. It is the capital of Namibia, yet everything closes around 1pm – exactly the time we arrived. There is an international airport – that is why this trip can start or end at this point. My crazy roommate is definitely out there. She is one of the most colorful people I have ever met. She wants nothing but happiness for every soul in the entire world. Part of me is super happy ... read more

I spent my last week back in Lubumbashi in Congo visiting a lot of friends and doing some serious work too. As usual, I'm using these trips to slide in little side-trips all over Africa. Let be honest, I miss a lot my two love ones at home, but this is such an opportunity. And yes, I need to thank Ma'ri for making all this possible, without her, I couldn't run around the world like this. But I'm preparing her own discovery of Africa for very soon...a very romantic trip to come! So this time it's Namibia for me...one more country, and I'm getting closer to my 100th country count by the day. Never been before to Namibia, so it's a real discovery for me. Having been running around the last few weeks, this is a ... read more

We have arrived in Namibia where we will stay with friends, Alex and Robyn and go on safari on Saturday. Yesterday, we visited Amani Lodge - a private game lodge where cheetahs have been rehabilitated from small and then hopefully released into the wild. Five cheetahs are being trained to hunt and kill as a pack. The keepers are feeding them small meals which have to be shared. There is also a leopard which was raised from kitten and when he got too big, the owners discarded him, and a lion and lioness ( kalahari) which we also got to look at in this very large area, Great fun and lots of photographs!!... read more

Back to civilisation again, but only just. We stop in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, for a quick internet and shopping break. We are warned to carry our backpacks on our front and be extra vigilant, but it doesn't seem too dangerous to me. Much more built up than other towns we have visited, but still really a one street centre. A few larger shops and pricey souvenir outlets but hard to recognise as a capital city. Our hostel is out of town, Cardboard Box, so we have taxi's arranged for our evening meal. Joe's Game Restaurant, excellent food, awful service as we have now come to expect. The speciality is the mixed grill skewer, chicken, kudu, ostrich, crocodile and zebra, all amazing. And the side dish of corn fritters is amazing, must remember to get ... read more

I will be visiting Namibia later this month. Would like to visit Etosha but don't have that much money. If I should go that way I'd like to make it worth while, like spending at least 2 days and enough money for stay. I'm thinking of going to Tsumeb. Are there cheap and reliable transport that way, as I don't have transport. And what's to be seen and do in that part of the world. By the way I've just joined TravelBlog. Thanks!... read more

I just realized where to find the comments that everyone has been making. I didn't think anyone was commenting, but I just read through all of them and was crying the whole time. I am so blessed to be here and to be experiencing everything and hearing what everyone had to say just put it over the top! I am sorry that it took so long for me to find that but it was just what I needed to see. I am very sad about leaving in less than a week and know that I will have a hard time going home and transitioning back to life there. There is no doubt that this country, culture and people will be in my heart forever. Last night all of the girls went out to dinner and part ... read more
