Namibia - Wow.....Desert, bush, dunes and an ocean!! I'm going to leave the next two blog posts fairly brief and let my pictures do the talking - as they are good. Arrived in Windhoek after a 20 hour bus journey from Livingstone, Zambia - used Intercape who provided a quality service, apart from the air con. Due to the roaring temperatures during the day, the company leave the air con on all night which resulted in everyone freezing to death. I actually had to grab my sleeping bag at a stop north of Windhoek during the middle of the night as I was far too cold. Also, saw an elephant crossing the road when we were driving along the Caprivi Strip. Windhoek - modern, developed city - extremely clean and very sparsely populated, not surprising given ... read more

Your way of meeting us, helping us with planning of our "road-trip", use of your camping gear have been marvelous. Without this help, it haven't been possible. Well my friends - what an absolute slacker i am! in all seriousness, this is the first time i have been able to sit at a computer since my last update back in Zambia. So i shall fill you in on our adventures through Botswana and Namibia, and then i will write another entry for South Africa. Windoek, Namibia, 29 August 2012 We arrived in Windoek at lunch time and booked into our rooms. We then had a pizza for lunch and caught the hotels bus into the city. Tom had a haircut and I found a card and present for Tom. Cards are certainly not a thing that the Namibians do as I had a difficult time finding a card. I also had worse trouble finding a get well card for my little granddaughter, Gemma, who is having her little bent ear corrected on 7 September. I found a DVD with African images and music on it and post cards with African animals for a get well card. We were too late to post the card for Gemma because we got there just after 4.30pm even though the locals said the Post ... read more

We checked in, dumped our bags then headed out to check out Windhoek… it didn’t take long, the CBD is very small. We walked up a street to a famous german church and on the way walked past a street market of touristy goods, a bunch of women were there selling figurines and jewellery, they are called the Himba and wear mud over their bodies and have amazing hair, with almost like thick dreadlocks and wear thick necklaces. We walked down Independence ave, the main street and down a shopping mall. We had lunch in an Italian restaurant and had nice pizzas. We bought dinner from pick and pay, the supermarket nearby. That night we went to bed early, very tired from not a proper nights sleep the night before on the bus, but our room ... read more

Hello I'm still alive, just. While we're here we have to sleep with the baby baboons, of which there are 5. The biggest one, Troy, has taken quite a liking to me, and to no one else. So I have in my bed with me nearly every night which is pretty knackering. I had Troy and the tiny one, Bakiies last night which was fine, until Bakiies pulled his nappy off... not so fun. We were down in NamibRand last week releasing our leopard which was amazing. It is SUCH a beautiful part of Namibia, amazing sun sets. It's supposed to be semi-desert but is quite green at the mo die to all the rain they've had down there. I was ill for a few days so stayed in bed but the days I was alive ... read more

Been in Namibia for over a week now and this is the first chance I've had to get on the internet.. Not really sure where to start with the stories.. I arrived last Thursday to possibly the worst thunder and lightening storm I have ever seen and it continued to rain for the next few days, eventually got some sun on the weekend.. and got burnt. I did my first two days on the Wildlife side of the programme which involved walking the big baboons who lke to have a ride on your shoulder and pee down your neck, feeding all the animals including the big carnivores that there are at N/a a'n Ku Se, I think it's 5 lions, 2 leopards, 10 cheaters and 2 wild dogs. Food prep includes cutting up lots og veggies ... read more

My plans have been finalized. I am staying at the Rivendell guest house in Windhoek on March 8,9,13,14,16. I ran across this be accident by doing various web searches related to Namibia. I cancelled my stay at another hotel in the city for this one. I had originally planned to stay at 3 places in the city. I thought this would simplify the process by staying all 5 nights in the city at one place. My only concern is that this place may not have air conditioning. Check it out at: rivendellnamibia.com The Rivendell house appears to be a backpackers place, but the photos on the site make it look very comfortable and they welcome families. There is a common kitchen if I want to cook, a pool, my room has a bathroom, all for $42 ... read more

Neither staff nor participants can quite believe the end of the expedition has come and it’s time to swap email addresses and say farewells before continuing journeys homeward-bound, across the country or to pastures new. It’s been a fantastic ten weeks - a roller-coaster ride of emotions, new friendships, different experiences and expanded comfort zones! We’ve built a school from scratch, designed and constructed three playgrounds, one as part of a new sensory trail for the site at REST, where we've also helped develop a new aviary, improved a range of facilities at Cape Cross Seal Reserve and trekked many, many kilometres through river beds and desert plains to the Skeleton Coast. We’ve made an impact on the lives of communities and wildlife across Namibia and have travelled the length and breadth of its long, ... read more

Participants returned to field base over the weekend looking tanned and healthy, albeit a little scruffier as another phase took its toll on their expedition kit. There were lots of hugs and kisses as friends reunited to tell tales of the past three weeks and exchange gossip and photos of their time away. With two phases down and just one remaining they are now a hardened bunch and expert fire lighters, porridge makers and long drop constructors. We wave goodbye to five more Explorers who swap expedition for home life and welcome two new faces for the final phase. As before, we hear now from those out in the field who have put pen to paper to share their experiences. Once again, there were enthusiastic responses to the messages sent via the blog, so thanks ... read more
