Hello all! I hope things are good in the states? Here time is moving, but probably not the same speed as it is back home. We swore in and became official Peace Corps Volunteers Wednesday, July 23rd. The next day nearly my entire group departed Lilongwe for their respective sites. I, unfortunately, had an interview with a representative of the Board of Nursing and Midwifery Counsel or whatever they call it here… I was very nervous, but I think it went okay. She did, however, assign me to a 4 week orientation in Blantyre, but the other nurses have similar orientations as well. Those who remained left the next day. I left with the 2 other nurses Friday the 25th for Blantyre, and because of our locations it took us an additional travel day to get ... read more

After a good night of sleep it was the last time to get up early to catch a bus in Mozambique. Apparently the buses in Malawi leave later. I like Malawi already. To complete the list of vehicles used in my trip the Mozambican decided to build the border 4km away from the closest Mozambican town (but strangely enough just at the outskirts of a Malawi town). to cross these last few km you have either the choice of using your own transport which we didn’t have, to walk which is no fun or to pick one of the very very persistent guys with a Chinese push bike which has a padded piece of wood attached to the back and some foot rests welded on. Lazy as I am I chose to let someone else sweat ... read more

Tragic to only write two entries while in the beautiful country of Malawi. After 40 days here, it is finally time to move on. What a time it has showed us, however. The people are as welcoming as you can be, the scenery as beautiful and untouched as it gets, and the culture makes you forget you're in one of the poorest countries in the world. I don't have time to expand more on my time here, but hopefully I will at some point later. Last I left you I was in Lilongwe after our time on the lake. Since then we came to Blantyre, the big bustling city, met up with a principal from New Zealand, and took off to the Zomba Plateau. We spent 6 days there, relaxing, reading, cooking, biking, hiking, and Will ... read more

On Monday February 18th, I was beginning my last week of work at Monkey Bay Community Hospital and preparing to leave Malawi. That same day, I found out that a few days earlier, another Joanna arrived. Deborah, who I worked with in the Pharmacy department, had given birth to a baby girl and named her after me. I feel pretty honoured! I now have a great excuse to go back to Malawi - i'll have to see how my Malawian counterpart is getting on! For now, she is happy and healthy. I arrived back in bonnie Scotland today. I am absolutely freezing! I have just been looking at some of my videos, and texting friends back there to say that I arrived ok, and it already feels like Malawi is a million miles away. I apologize ... read more

Lots has happened in the past week. I have had good times (that have been extremely good) and bad times (that have been extremely bad). I first had my birthday. My 29th in Malawi. I had a wonderful day. It started with a soda on the Chancy Maples floating bar, watching baboons that were fighting on the rocks. I had a great Malawian lunch at a local pub next to the hospital, I swam and snorkeled in the lake & I even had homemade chocolate birthday cake. On Friday afternoon we went to an MTO attackers football game. They lost 5-3 (which was debated as much as usual) but we had a great time anyway. We taught the local kids how to do the Mexican wave. Saturday we headed to Cape Maclear with 5 new volunteers, ... read more

The second day at the orphanage was definitely better than than the first - I think there was just far too much to take in that I could barely think! Anyway highlights of today included teaching a 3 yr old how to play football...they are SERIOUSLY football mad out here, partic. the english clubs like liverpool, man u & arsenal..hehe, it would be really funny if little cute boy (I've nicknamed him Beckam because he was actually v good at kicking!) remembers that a funny looking white girl taught him how to play football!! Its strange because at first, driving through the villages unnerved me a bit as people stared quite a lot, but when asking the others they said that basically in some villages they had NEVER seen a white person in the flesh, ... read more

WOW!! This place is just as I imagined and more...as I'm writing this I know I cant do it justice. The drive from the airport through the villages, the orange muddy tracks, fields of crops, men sitting by the side of the road talking, women with babies glued to their backs...then arriving at the orphanage today..all those smiling faces and waving hands, I apologise in advance - it sounds sooo cheesy, but my heart melted and the tears nearly started the first time one of the children wanted me to pick them up today just minutes after I arrived, they love playing ball games, being hugged and just being around us. As expected, facilities are minimal...I mean, I'm happy to 'rough' it and go to the loo hovering over a hole in the ground in a ... read more

A Meeting with Soldier For those of you who know me (and my appearances on stage at Cirque de Soleil, dueling Piano bars, Travis concerts & the like), you will not be surprised when I tell you that we ended up on stage at the Lucius Banda concert, dancing with the ‘soldier’ himself. The story of how this happened is long so I’ll save it for now, but I WILL say it was a fun night and I am a big fan! Since I last wrote, much has happened. Our house is becoming busier as the number of guests has changed from 4 to 3 to 10 in the past few days. Steve has gone home for a couple of weeks of rest and relaxation and we have been joined by 4 new volunteers (2 Canadian, ... read more

The Inconvenient Centipede On the way home from Mangochi (email town) last week, we suddenly heard our driver, Watipa, utter ‘sh*t’, before not-very-slowly pulling our Toyota minibus to a stop. There was a centipede (of the poisonous variety) on the dashboard. The word ‘centipede’ does not do this thing justice. It had 100 legs but they were by no means close together, causing the thing to be pretty large (a foot or so long). Our coordinator Francis managed to get it out of the vehicle but all the commotion caused an unsuspecting cyclist to fall off his bike, dropping his load of tomatoes at the same time. Three cars then joined forces to try to run over the insect so that one of the many people who walk barefoot along the roads in the pitch black ... read more

With only five days left at the orphanage before I leave, and back to full strength, I'm keen to do as much as I can and tie up all the things I've started. Before going into the orphanage after the new year break, I need to get my 30 day permit extended at the Immigration office for my last week in the country. Like most of the office set ups I've seen - the administration system is slow and disorderly. Looking through the bars to the desks behind there are papers and files everywhere. Something I have seen in every office and large shop is piles of paper and ink stamping. Even as you leave the big superstore 'Game' you must have your receipt stamped by an attendant. As the geep bumps along through the village ... read more
