I was re-reading through some of the previous entrys and realized there were alot of mispellings and mistakes in syntax or just poorly constructed sentences. My apologies, these mistakes are due to the speed with which I write this (without re-reading them) and the internet, which is slow and occasionally fails to save my entries correctly. I hope they make enough sense! Now to Sunday. We went to Church Services at St. Matthew's in Monrovia this was Alberta's (one of the members of our group) home church. She was excited to see the kids she taught in Sunday School, and was astonished as they greeted her as grown adults. They gave us a warm welcome and blessing and we were encouraged to introduce ourselves in front of a HUGE congregation. Kim, Andrew, Tom and I also ... read more

Today we went to Helena's sister's wedding. Helena is Pastor Moses' wife. This will be the first of two weddings we will be attending during our stay here . It was absolutely incredible. Gave me some ideas for mine. Mostly ideas that Jeff won't like much. The wedding started 3 hours late due to the rain, and people were still trickling in during the service. It was vibrant, loud and extravagant in every positive sense of the word. The church was whitewashed cement with a tin roof, wooden pews, and decorated in white balloons, ribbons and maroon crepe. We sat towards the middle feeling slightly awkward. Loud pulsing music, kettle drums, regular drums, a gourd instrument with beads like a maracca (sp?) along with a singer got the crowd going (dancing in the aisles/clapping and singing). ... read more

Today we met with some various organizations of the Lutheran Church, including the Supervisor of the Lutheran School System, the Head of Christian Education, head of youth ministry the President and secretary of The Womens’ Ministry, Head of Urban Ministry, and The Lutheran Bishop. It was a day filled with alot of facts and statistics. Some uniting threads of all the conversations were: 1) The destruction and devastation that the war caused 2) The move from relief to development and in tandem the attempts to rebuild infrastructure and capacity 3) Education and 4) Female Empowerment/the role of woman/gender equality in Liberia. The education system was particulary interesting to learn about. The Lutheran School system, runs from Sept -June, (a shift from what they did before, pre-war; March to December). Kids start around age 4 to 5, ... read more

I returned from my trip to Liberia where I visited Bong and Lofa Counties and attended the 13th biannual convention of the Lutheran Church in Liberia. Each time I visit Liberia, I am amazed by the vitality and ingenuity of the Liberian people. The country is recovering slowly but a lot remains untoched. It was quite an experience celebrating the 13th bi-annual convention of the Lutheran Church in LIberia where Bishop Sumoward Harris was reelected by a large vote of confidence. For the occasion, the LCL received delagations from Sweden headed by the Archbishop of the Church of Sweden, from Danemark, Germany and the USA. Prior to the convention, the LCL gathered all the partners in mission and we all celebrated the accomplishments of the past years and the hope for mission and ministries in Liberia ... read more

From January 15-27, 2008; I visited Liberia with my friends and colleagues The Rev. Twila Schock and The Rev. Rodger Prois of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. I am grateful for their leadership and commitment to God’s mission in the world. I am equally thankful for the opportunity that I had to meet, share and walk with the Lutheran Church in Liberia. Through the LCL ministries of health, education, HIV/AIDS, trauma healing, urban ministries, peace and reconciliation, and word and sacrament ministries, I had a glimpse of the joy and challenges of the church leadership in ministry. Liberia, West African country located in the golf of Guinea, struggles to recover from the civil war which lasted for more than a decade. Liberia has an area of 111,370 sq km and a population estimated at 3 ... read more

All, Logan and Adrienne have invited me for an eventful church mission to Liberia in West Africa. The long journey included several layovers in Washington, D.C. (USA), Brussels (Belgium), and Dafar (Senegal) before finally arriving in Capital of Monrovia, Liberia. After spending two days in a barb-wired compound in Liberia’s Baptist Church, we continued on to the village of Balama, through series of muddy dirt roads. Balama consists of five smaller villages, and we had great time learning from each other. Approximately two hundred kids living in a poor condition, and our presence were valued as a life-time gift from the above. It really humbles you. Logan mentioned that he wasn’t particularly enjoying cold shower, but hey, we can’t have everything here. But I am glad to have such opportunity to visit a West African nation. ... read more

Well... it's finally here... the Africa Mercy has arrived... after waiting and waiting and dates being pushed back and back further. But she has finally come and it was an amazing day of celebrating and fun! We had everyone out there with flags, and waiting on every corner of the Anastasis watching as the Africa Mercy slowly came through port and docked beside us! it was a really neat experience and I am so glad that I was able to experience that. It was like being a part of history watching it come in and people come down the gangway for the first time. I have walked around the ship and explored it a bit. It is HUGE and it is really nice inside... it really does look like a hospital ship! It is fairly ... read more

Like I promised from my last entry, I want to tell you of the story of Winndey... a patient that I admitted about a month ago here on the Anastasis... Winndey was found by one of the crew actually at the Bong Mines train station that I have now been to since going there last week. I am unsure of exactly how they met, but I'm sure while waiting, because there are many people that linger around us, they may have started a conversation. The crew member found out about a problem he had and told him to come to the ship to see if we could help him. So one day, as Kate and I were going through the admissions for that afternoon, Winndey's name struck me and stood out, and I couldn't wait ... read more

Well, we have been in "transition" for a week now and I have found myself really missing the patients and working with the translators. It is an odd feeling so far to be here but not working as a nurse. I have volunteered myself and my services to te Operations Director, Graeme Walls, who is in charge of the whole transition. I am his personal assistant! And you guessed it, he's a bit stressed out and all over the place, going to meetings, talking to everyone, constantly answering emails... cause it's not like we have done this before... moved onto another ship. But I have yet again, volunteered for something I had NO idea what I was getting myself into. So now I work at a desk all day, in front of a computer, compling ... read more
