Arrived in the outskirts of Nairobi, staying at Karen Camp in Karen in the suburbs. Met Gary and Aussie Craig 2 of the 3 additions here in Nairobi from the African Trails truck. Went to town to post the souvenir things we bought along the way, it was very staright forward and we do not have to go to the city, Karen has a post office!! The camp is alright, a bit out of town but chilled and they have darts and pool table, they have guava trees along the campgrounds so i helped myself, they are really good!!
The next day went to town, we took the local bus service, the matatus because it is much cheaper. We went to the Java Cafe for lunch and internet for a couple hours, the girls wanted to do shopping so we went to the souvenir stalls, some of the souvenir sellers are quite persistent and annoying, one even asked Craig if he wants a fight! Very hot day, bad traffic, the way back to camp was arduous, finally made it and had dinner then off to bed after a few beers.
Next day went to see movies at the Junction
NAIROBI
KAREN CAMP and prestige plazas, we saw the Narnia movie and the Jackie Chan flick Forbidden kingdom, while walking from one cinema complex to another we met 3 young American students here for an exchange program and they leave that night back to the States, one is from Chatham, MA.
Applied for Ethiopian visas, more expensive for Americans though we get multiple entries... That night we went to Carnivores for farewell dinner for Zoe. we lost Kirsten, Anna , Trudi and John here, Jackie is another addition to the group, we know her from when we were stuck with the Af trails truck in Brazaville. We watched the finals of the European cup at Carnivores after dinner they have big TVs set up, Spain beat Germany. The nights here in Nairobi have been cold ans we cant wait for some warm weather.
Left the Karen camp and drove to Isiolo and bush camped somewhere, it is our cook groups turn, it was a struggle as there were long and spiky acacia thorns all over and keeps piercing my imitation crocs, quite windy so cooking took forever.
Next day drove to Samburu national park and camped within the park, i
suddenly have a migraine, the light is too bright at midday and it triggered the episode plus a bit dehydrated. We quicly set up our tents amidst a pack of monkeys in the campsite trying to steal food or anything from us. i had a migraine so I lied down to rest apparently I fell adleep and started snoring but quickly woke up when Andy pulled a cord behind our tent me thinking it was one of the baboons wanting to get in the tent. I can hear people shooing them off and running away scared as they might attack and bite. In the afternoon we went off again in the truck to see more wildlife. we saw lions!! and elies and gazelles, the usual... Back at the camp, Chris showed off his weapon against the baboons, acacia thorns bundled up and tied to the top of the stick, it look risiculous but loks nasty.. Jack and Craig went for a walk along the dried up river next to the camp but the armed guards were not hapy as lions a apparently come there every now and then, that night afetr dinner we saw herds of ellies grazing next to
the camp, quite close they were a bit intimidating one came close to Jackie's tent we watched them feed for awhile backing up a bit when they move forward but they nevr got irritated and moved on, but it was a cool experience to be that close to them, you can hear then break the branches and munch on the tree foliage, A group of almost a dozen ellies some are juveniles...
Next morning another game drive on our way out of Samburu, we did not see much. Around 8:30 am we had breakfast just outside the gates. Long day drive to Marsabit. Over lunch we were visited by masai in their local attire, most of them wear them everyday in this part of Kenya(north). After Marsabit the terrain changed to rocky arid semi desert, it was hot, we camped at a very rocky place and full of holes of which snakes might live, Craig saw one crawl into the hole while having a pee. Cold and windy night...
Nest day drove to a frontier town where we picked up 2 armed guards, as apparently rebels abound in this place, for 3 hours we drove til we get
to the frontier town of Moyale, the terrain changed gradually again, from rocky arid to shrubby outcrops here and there, lots of goats and camels being herded about.. We stopped for lunch and we went to a local place, food is cheap and good then off to Ethiopia on a cloudy cold day....
