And here we are again. I've been here for a month. Can you believe it? i couldn't. so what's happened this past week? hmm... well, last time i updated, i was at a new internet cafe. it was all great and dandy and cheaper than the previous one. but it was WAY slow. and then one of the workers started hitting on me and asking me if he could help and i kept saying no (what could he have possibly helped me with?). then he asked for my name and e-mail and phone number and where i was staying and how long i was going to be here (didn't give him anything). then he tried to give me his phone number and e-mail address. i tried to ignore him and acted pretty coldly to him, but ... read more

It's been a while. Sorry. So last Friday, i worked in Grade 4. I taught and such. Not very eventful. Although Mr. Jallow is the best teacher i've seen here. he loves what he does, and he makes things really interesting for the kids. it's really great to work with him. in the afternoon i was in drama club. The Norwegian woman Cece wasn't there, so i taught it myself. first i taught them "zingamama" which they loved. then i taught them lion face lemon face to exercise their face muscles. then i taught them about improv and we spent the rest of the club time playing "bus stop." They had a blast. After school Jarry and i went to Marina to see Aunty Bin. She's the head of marina, which is an international school with ... read more

On saturday at 2 Njareh picked me up and took me to Banjul. The city itself was nothing spectacular, but we went into the market. IT WAS HEAVEN. fabric store after fabric store after fabric store of beautiful african fabrics. i bought a ton of fabrics for under $100 and am probably going to get them made either tomorrow or saturday. on sunday i woke up to the sound of women laughing and talking in Wolof. they were outside making donuts for the Gamo. i went out and helped them. they had a huge pot of vegetable oil over a fire and were taking chunks of dough and putting them in. then they took the donuts out when they were ready. that's all their was to it. we made 4 giant tubs of these donuts. that ... read more

That's my name! and it's been so worn out. so let me explain some things because it would be easier to reference people after they've been explained. the respectful way to address an authority figure is by calling them Aunty if they're an unmarried woman, Mrs. if they're married, and Mr. if they're a man. Aunty Bin is my homestay mother and founder of the ABC learning center. two of her sisters are Aunty Fatou and Aunty Ngoneh. Aunty Fatou lives with us and makes food for school lunches. Aunty Ngoneh is the head of ABC 1 (nursery school through grade 2) and her daughter is Fatou Ngoneh. Jarry is my 20-year-old homestay sister. Aunty Bin adopted her about a year and a half ago. her family lives in some other part of Gambia, but Jarry ... read more

Winter sun these days tends to rank higher and higher on a tourist's wishlist, and the option of spending Christmas Day on a beach in the Gambia almost seemed like the greatest christmas present that was never intended for unwrapping. The long-established Senegambia Beach hotel, which lent its name to the Senegambia entertainment strip leading off from the hotel, is one of the country's prime properties, and its beachfront location suggests why its popularity in the context of the entire country will always have the stamp of permanence. This was the most authentically African country visited to date, and sufficient evidence to suggest that the country, in land mass terms 'a finger in the mouth of Senegal', literally thrives off its income generated from tourism. Excursions are adequate, at least for a week-long visit, and the ... read more

A few snap shots from our visit to the Kachikaly Crocodile Pool in The Gambia. The locals believe that the pool has mystical powers and women who are not able to conceive come and collect the water from the pool and bathe with it. The crocodiles represent the power of fertility - you know I stayed far away from that water!! There are a bunch of kids running around The Gambia who are named after the pool - their births, no doubt attributed to the mothers' visit to the site.... read more
