Here we go again, after a few days off the real early morning wake up, coffee and game drive and it doesn’t get any easier in pursuit of the elusive lion. We have decided too to take advantage of another potential 3 game drives if we don’t see a lion before. This thing is not going to beat us despite saying ‘nature is what it is’. Hot coffee does get you ready for driving around looking for animals and it does fortify the body against the considerable chill factor at 6am in the morning even if the guide drives the vehicle at a sedate 40kph up to the park entrance. This morning our guide was Phuti and he had a trainee called West who sat alongside us in the front tier of seats. Alongside Phuti was ... read more

We did get a shadowy glimpse at dusk yesterday of a lioness and then she was gone. No photo and no video. We just have to do the morning drive this morning and then this afternoon if we are unlucky this morning. So here it is again,5.15am and we get ourselves dressed for the wind chill factor that you can’t avoid in the open sided Toyota land cruiser whistling along at 40kph towards the park entrance. This morning our guide is Odey and in the front passenger seat is a young woman from the capital Gaborone who is studying tourism hospitality. Our fellow passengers are a couple of Aussies from Wollongong who we met yesterday and found them to be enjoyable company. We got to sleep in a bit today as our first game drive wasn’t until 8:30. We headed out with our driver, Tito, into the 11,000 Kilometer square park where we drive parallel to the river. It was a relatively slow game drive but we still saw lots of elephants, impala, kudu, various birds, some giraffe in the distance, warthogs and baboon. After the drive we relaxed in our room until lunch time. Following lunch, we did a massive repack. Tomorrow we catch a bush plane out to Rra Dinare, our stop on the Okavango delta. We can only take a maximum weight of 44kg and bags have to be smaller than a particular size so we are going to have to ship one by courier to our next stop. This is apparently something that they ... read more

Today we started off viewing the Zimbabwean side of Victoria Falls. They err even more impressive from that side as we could walk almost the whole distance. After that, we hopped in the car with ours river, Mortimer, who drove us across the border to Botswana. Border control was confusing but since Mortimer knew his way around, it was very smooth. Botswana is very concerned about foot and mouth disease so both our tired and shoes needed to be disinfected in the way In. We got to our next stop on the Chobe river just in time for lunch. Unfortunately, they misunderstood my pepper allergy and lunch was a bit of a gong show - but eventually it was all sorted out. We relaxed after lunch until our afternoon game boating expedition. We had s relaxing ... read more

oday was going to be an easy day for us. All we had to do was meet our transport to Kasane, Botswana at the front entrance to our Victoria Falls hotel and we would be whisked away. Well that part turned out fine; it was what happened after we reached the Cresta Mwana Hotel, Kasane that meant this was another day on the go for us. We had time to spare before the pickup and so decided to take a stroll downtown for some window shopping which might turn into some big time shopping if we find what we are looking for and the price is right. In the 4 or 5 times we have walked to and from the hotel to the township and vice versa, some 400 metres, we have always been offered a ... read more

Got up really early (5 am) to go into Chobe NP. Saw lots of birds, hippos in the water but the highlights was a pride of lions near the water where there was a dead elephant. Not sure what killed the elephant. Anyway it was fascinating to watch them. One lioness protected the kill from vultures and other birds. Even through we were in 9 passenger open air safari trucks they did not seem to be bothered by us. However we were told to not stand or reach out. The lions just see a large thing but if you were to get out that would change how they would act. Saw a few elephants here but not as many as I thought.... read more

Today we got to our camp near Chobe. It was an adventure. The main highways in Botswana are pretty good just a few potholes. But there is a lot of police speed traps as speeds will go from 60 to 120 to 80 km. We have been lucky but one fellow we are traveling with got 2 tickets today. There is also veterinary checkpoints to supposedly control meat and fruit products. At most we have been waved through by a friendly officer but at one we had to pay 20 pula. Not sure why but was not going to argue. To get to the camp we are at now was a sand road that was a challenge. Mark made it through ( must be from all his snow driving experience) but 3 motorhomes got stuck. We ... read more

The weather is getting hotter as we go north. Is was around 38C. Today we are still heading towards Chobe NP. Staying at a camp in Nata and we when got there saw some very old cars that are part of a rally. Then we saw some very nice new cars but I will leave that for Mark to tell you about. Today went on a tour of the local village and found out a little Botswana. Botswana is a pretty stable country and economically doing well. We were told that when you turn 18 you can apply for a piece of land for free. Also health care and education are free. At the village we saw how they made the bricks for building a house from cow manure mixed with the sandy soil. Interesting tour! ... read more

"Africa gives you the knowledge that man is a small creature, amongst other creatures, in a large landscape." - Doris Lessing Leaving Notten’s Bush Camp was somewhat sad as we had a wonderful time and met some very nice people. But….as all travelers know, another adventure awaited, so we loaded up and headed for the local airport. We would put this to you dear readers…how many times have you taken a transport to the airport where you drove for about 30 minutes and did not ride on at least a gravel road? Well, this was the case for us as we were in an open Land Cruiser on bumpy trails headed for the friendly skies. It was if we were on another bush drive. When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised at how nice and new ... read more
