It was a beautiful sunny day today. We had breakfast at Hotel Baglio Della Luna and then went up into the tower and walked the garden area. The Italian bees were busy in the garden. We packed up and headed to the valley of the Temples. The line for tickets was fairly long but moving quickly. There were 3 major temples in the valley with large columns. There were also numerous other structures and ruins. There were several carved out stone walls that had been tombs. We had a nice walk through the valley. We stopped for lunch at a restaurant called Cacciatore. Pedro ordered a steak as it seemed like a great place for steak. They had a full variety of different types of porterhouse steaks. After lunch we drove to our next hotel Badiulo ... read more

We had a lovely breakfast at our hotel this morning. An assortment of fresh fruit, breads, scrambled eggs, salami and cappuccino. The hotel Mon Plaisir was beautiful with well kept gardens and a pool. We were not able to use the pool as it was too chilly outside. We loaded the Tiago and headed to Erice. It was up the hill outside of town and after about a half hour of switchbacks we made it up. We visited a variety of churches and the bell tower. We had lunch at Postale 17. Pasta again. Very nice eggplant sauce with pasta shaped like a hollow spring. It was the width of about 1/4 inch and about 1.5 inches long. After lunch we drove down towards our next destination. The roadway was set up for a race up ... read more

It was sunny when we left our hotel. By the time we got to Palermo it was drizzling. We parked the car and then hopped on a horse drawn carriage. We had a tour of the area and then we were dropped near one of the two fish markets. The market had numerous stands and you requested the various selections of fish, shellfish and octopus. The variety was then lightly breaded and then deep fried. It was so fresh you could taste the ocean. After our lunch we wandered through the streets enjoying the sights of various churches and fountains. We made our way to the other fish market. This one was several blocks of various fish markets along with many side dishes. Most of the stands in this area were grilling the seafood and fish. ... read more

Started the day with a beautiful sunrise from the balcony at Hotel Palladio. Later there were cruise ships outside our hotel. Two ships were just arriving and then tendering passengers into Naxos. We had breakfast at the hotel and then checked out. The next planned stop was Messina. Pedro filled the Taigo with gas from the station across from our hotel and then we were off on the tollway to Messina. The toll was 2.4 euros. We arrived in Messina and found parking near Tempio di Cristo Re. We took a short walk to Tempio di Cristo Re which is a war memorial that is filled with soldiers from WW2. There were views of the harbor below. We walked down to the town center and had lunch at Bar San Giacomo. Lasagna and fettuccine with mushrooms ... read more

This morning we had breakfast at our hotel again. Fresh squeezed orange juice and a variety of eggs and breads and croissants and sweet treats along with some typical Italian meats. Cappuccino is also always a great way to start the day. After breakfast we headed to the archeological area in Naxos. We saw the tower that was built by the Greek about 300 to 200 B.C. And also a variety of anchors from the same time period. We walked to the port area. There was an Olympic torch monument there from the 1960 Olympics. After our morning walk we drove to Taormina. We drove to the hilltops and went to the church Madre Della Rocca. We had parked at the bottom so we had a hike up, but the view and the church built into ... read more

Today we decided to go to Mount Etna. We consulted Google Maps and then got into the Volkswagen Taigo and we were ready to go. Pedro has been doing very well with his Sicilian driving. It seems that he may have some Italian heritage as the roundabouts and driving have not been very difficult for him. The trip was supposed to take about an hour from Giardini Naxos to Etna. We navigated the tollway and then off to the side roads through the small towns. We followed one of the tour buses part of the way, but we were able to overtake it on a straightaway. We were glad we were in a small vehicle as we navigated the small towns along the route. At Etna we made our way to the center of the assortment ... read more

Arrived in Sicily today flying into the Catania airport via Rome departing initially from Chicago. We had one hour for our plane transfer in Rome. We did a quick walk through the airport and through immigration to get our passports stamped. We made it to our gate with about 25 minutes to spare. We checked in and then took a shuttle bus to the plane. Both flights were uneventful. Chicago to Rome was about 9 hours and then Rome to Catania was just over one hour. We landed in Catania and headed for the baggage claim area. Our suitcases were not there. This was not unexpected due to the short transfer time in Rome. We made our way to the missing bag/lost and found area and after waiting for several other groups of passengers submitting claims. ... read more

We overnighted at Siracuse and woke up to much warmer weather, although it would be soon be getting cold and windy for Leonie and I as we had opted to go up Mt Etna. The 90 min bus drive was well worth the trip - we were rewarded with amazing views and a walk around one of Etna's many craters - from some angles were could easily be on a different planet. It is hard to believe that people still leave on the volcano. With only 1 day in Sicily we did not have enough time to explore the island, but it was nice to be back in warmer weather - might even go for a swim!!!... read more

Mosaics en masse In the 4th century CE a large and elaborate Roman Villa, Villa Romana del Casale, was built in central Sicily. It is a bit surprising that they built it in central Sicily and not somewhere else. Today it is relatively easy to reach the site, thanks to modern roads and cars. But since it is quite far from the coast it still feels like a remote location. The closest town is Piazza Armerina which no more than maybe 21,000 people call home. Also in the fourth century there was some kind of settlement there but I guess this place must have been quite far away from everything. So why would anyone build a magnificent villa in the middle of nowhere? Was it a recluse who built it? One can only guess. The villa ... read more

One ancient tomb, several ancient temples, one ancient fortress and one not so ancient ghost town This blog entry covers most of the places I visited in the second half of this trip in Sicily. When I look through the pictures I see that there are a lot of historical (ancient) places there. But there is some other stuff in there too so hopefully there is something for people who are not history buffs as well. Scala dei Turchi Scala dei Turchi is a cliff face that is unusual as it is white. The rock is sedimentary and the white colour comes from it being made up mainly of shells from a certain kind of plankton. Sant'Angelo Muxaro Sant'Angelo Muxaro is one of many small hill towns in Sicily. The towns were built on hilltops... read more
