We had a lovely breakfast at our hotel this morning. An assortment of fresh fruit, breads, scrambled eggs, salami and cappuccino. The hotel Mon Plaisir was beautiful with well kept gardens and a pool. We were not able to use the pool as it was too chilly outside. We loaded the Tiago and headed to Erice. It was up the hill outside of town and after about a half hour of switchbacks we made it up. We visited a variety of churches and the bell tower. We had lunch at Postale 17. Pasta again. Very nice eggplant sauce with pasta shaped like a hollow spring. It was the width of about 1/4 inch and about 1.5 inches long. After lunch we drove down towards our next destination. The roadway was set up for a race up to Erice from a town below. Here’s what I found online: “ The ‘Cronoscalata Monte Erice’ is a car competition held every year in Erice. The date of the first event dates back to September 5, 1954.
It is a race similar to a timed mountain climb and is a valid test for the Italian Mountain Speed Championship. The current length of the route is
5730 meters, the cars start from Valderice and arrive in Erice.“ Pedro was excited about the driving course as some of the corners were protected by round bales wrapped red, white and green like the Italian flag. At the start, one of the roads was blocked for parking of the semi trailers. Luckily it was not our route we needed to take. We were heading to Temple of Segesta. We arrived at the site and found our parking. We got our tickets for the Temple and the Theater. The walk up to the temple was fairly steep but short. We paid extra for the bus transfer to the Theater. Both were amazing to see. After our walks checking out the views and structures we got back into the Taigo. Our next destination was the valley of the Temples. We booked our next hotel as we knew we would not be able to see the temples as it was getting too late. Our drive to the next hotel took about an hour and a half through hills and valleys filled with grape vines and olive trees and some citrus trees. It was a nice drive. We checked into our hotel that
has a tower from about 1594 on the grounds and it is part of the bar and dining area. We relaxed until dinner in the garden area with olive and lemon trees. We had a lemonade from the lemons from the garden. Initially we thought about picking one and making lemonade ourselves, but ended up asking the bartender to make the lemonade. He definitely gave us a look as if he had never made lemonade before and asked if he should add sugar to it. It was a delicious and refreshing drink. Dinner at the restaurant was excellent. Another beautiful day in Sicily.
The travel blog is not letting me download pictures today even though I have WiFi. You can check back later for the photos later as hopefully it will work tomorrow.
