As you have already noticed there are going to be some days when we will not have internet and phone service, so you will hear from us when we get it. Well, the winds finally died down last night and we all got a great night's sleep. We left the campground a little before 8:00, gassed up, then hit the road. It was a beautiful sunny morning. We were 35 miles from the Canadian border and Ray said it was a pleasure driving and not having to wrestle with the steering wheel. I said a silent prayer that it would remain that way as yesterday was a nightmare. The drive to the border was flat with farmlands until we reach the Sweetgrass Hills when it became more of a rolling terrain. The border crossing was uneventful. ... read more

The plan for today is to toddle off to Bodega Bay. We have a small delay because the engine light lit up on Bobbi’s car. Her son, Ron, came over this morning and is fixing a split hose. So we finally had an opportunity to meet one of Bobbi’s sons. Can I talk about Bobbi? Her name is Barbara Novak, Bobbi is her nickname. She lives on Barbi Lane. Bobbi has been actively involved with Girl Scouts for about 76 years. Bobbi is a Leader in Girl Scouts, not just a Girl Scout leader - there is a difference! Her garage is packed full of resources that she shares with all groups - books, stuffed animals, displays, stuffies, etc. This woman has more energy than any one person should have. She never stops and if you ... read more

Another good night's sleep and we were docked in Skagway. Apparently I slept a bit too long, because it was almost 10am when we went up for lunch. We both ate breakfast like yesterday, waffle, poached egg, sausage, etc. When we finished breakfast, we left the ship to check out Skagway. Apparently we had two fellow ships docked with us to day, one from Royal Caribbean and one from Princess Cruises. The ship was docked pretty close to shore, and it was an easy walk to Skagway. There was also a train called the White Pass Railway that went through the edge of town. We walked downtown and started checking things out, mostly the souvenir shops. There were also a couple of interesting old buildings, one was the Railroad Building from 1900 and the other was ... read more

From 2009, though this year's race will be tomorrow. And just for the record, I never streaked the race! Back in my running and jogging days, I ran in several editions of the Bay to Breakers Footrace in San Francisco. Back then, the race often experienced record numbers of entrants, and lived up to its name as the world's largest footrace. It begins at the foot of San Francisco Bay, then winds through the streets of the City, through Golden Gate Park, and finally onto the Great Highway and the Pacific Ocean (ie the breakers). The first race, known as the Cross City Race, began in 1912, as a precursor ... read more

After adventures in the airports, we have arrived in Santa Rosa at noon. Toronto to Dallas, Texas was a breeze. So then the adventure begins. Jane’s boarding pass said we needed to go to Gate D31 which required a lengthy ride on the Skylink train to get from C gates to D gates. At the D gates the big screen said we needed to go to C17! My boarding pass read C17 - why didn’t we look at my boarding pass first?? So back on the Skylink and around the track back to C17. With 5 minutes to spare we screeched up to Gate C17. Our delightful Bobbie is waiting in the outside courtyard at Santa Rosa enjoying a coffee and the lovely sun. At first it looks similar to home but differences show up quickly. ... read more

Today is our 50th Wedding Anniversary! Imagine, 50 years with the most wonderful woman in the world! We woke up around 8am, with the ship pulling to Juneau. Today, besides a very special dinner, we had booked the GoldBelt Tram. After another nice breakfast, we went ashore and walked to the tram to take it up to the top of the mountain. It was pretty busy, but the lines moved quite quickly. We reached the top, with some awesome views along the way. At the top, there was a restaurant/coffee shop, a gift shop, and a theater. They also had a couple of viewing areas and a short walk along a path for some even better views. We started to go on the trail, but it still had a good bit of snow and ice, so ... read more

The oldest fast food joints that I have visited (from Lovefood): Back in Lodi again: California is jam-packed with historic fast food restaurants, and the state is home to the oldest operating McDonald's and In-N-Out Burger restaurants. Its oldest chain, though, is url=http://awrestaurants.com/blog/it-all-started-roadside-stand-roots-aw-restaurants?fbclid=IwAR2iqIdS326MkwhvjM-Zsg-dxOqdqfmzDQ14QqIv3PQrqznVsf7wywJsa4IA&W, which started as a root beer stand in Lodi in 1919. That original roadside stand is long gone (though it is marked with a plaque). But A&W’s history is celebrated at the current Lodi location, which displays plenty of old memorabilia and regularly hosts classic car meet-ups. We often went after baseball practice. I spent a summer playing baseball in Lodi while I was in college. I can hear CCR singing their famous song! On the islands, you must try Rainbow... read more

After a pleasant, long night sleep, we woke up around 7am or so. We'd decided we were going to eat breakfast, since it would be a long day, and it was free. We got dressed, and headed upstairs (we were on Deck 9 and the cafeteria was on Deck 10). We got to the cafeteria area and started browsing the food. Most serving areas have names, and some of them are fairly common, in that they are still there the next day. There were Asian, Thai, The Carvery, Salads, Make Your Own Salad, Desserts. etc. We both got a small dish with an egg and spices, and watermelon pieces. Manoli got scrambled eggs and a half a grapefruit, and I got a very tasty belgian waffle. We took our time eating, and just enjoyed the views. ... read more

Well it probably won’t be a gold rush but we are rushing off to see our friend, Bobbi. We met Bobbi when we went to Africa in 2005 and have remained friends ever since. Our international travels have scored us some really wonderful friends. Jane & I will arrive in Santa Rosa about noon on Sunday and from there it will be almost non-stop. We will tarry in places like wineries, breweries, coastal towns, state parks, etc. etc. Or just hang out with Bobbi’s tortoises! Yosemite Park was on our list of want-tos but the park is still not officially open due to snow on the high mountain roads. There is so much to see and do in California that I’m sure we won’t miss out even if we don’t get to Yosemite.... read more
