2 hr train stop between Paris and Brugge. Only city in France where I had a language issue with a French speaking person.
Traveled from Paris, Gar du Nord train station, to Lille France, and then on to Brugge, Belgium. Spent three or four days in and around Brugge (Bruges for some).

The town was pickled in time by a set of economic catastrophes. The river silted up, sheep’s wool couldn’t be moved to the market, and the bankers left town. Not much modern about this town.

The days were so cold and I spent a good deal of time out of doors (8 to 10 hours per day), I built up an immunity to the cold, so you may now better understand why I’ll never complain about a Chicago winter (or summer for that matter).

The town was dead so I was happy to be moving on to Calais, France to catch the ferry to Dover (see last photo for story about tramping through private property port facilities to find my way to the ferry terminal).

Au revoir

Clean City Center; Very cold day. But I guess what day wasn't cold that winter, save for Barcelona.

Windmills, the only time on the trip to see a functioning powerhouse.

Wool industry died out hundreds of years ago and froze Brugge in a moment of time.

I took the train from Dover to Cailis, which dropped me off 3 or 4 miles from the ferry terminal. Could find no cab or bus to take me to the terminal today so I picked my way through the port terminal facilities and around large shipping containers. It's amazing that I even found the place. See the snow? Very, very, very cold days.
