Had an early start today & a full day seeing Vientiane. Walked up to Pha That Luang - The most important national monument in Laos. Looked spectacular from a distance but not so grand up close, also had a look at Patuxai, it is supposed to be their equivalent of the Arc de Triumph & was built with cement given to them by the Americans for them to build a runway . Not quite the Arc de Triumph but walked up to the top & it had good views over the city. Tuk tuk ride out to the Buddha park - 30mins away & is just by the Mekong river so nice to have a walk around. The tuk tuk dropped us back of at Pha That Luang & Skip thought it would be nice to walk back which I was quite up for at the time. 3 hours later, sore feet & a little lost. We knew we were in the wrong part of town when a plane appeared taking off from behind the trees.....which needless to say was the airport!!!??? So much for Skip knowing the way back to the Mekong river which was where we are staying. Anyway we soldiered on & found our way back in the end. Though to be honest it was good to get right in to the thick of Vientiane life and venture away from the touristy parts. Flying to Luang Prabang tomorrow morning with Loas airways (the only airline in the world that wont publish its safety record...GULP) so wish us luck! It's only a short flight but it will cut out a few days traveling by bus/boat. Plenty of bus journeys later on as we venture south.
PICS TO FOLLOW SOON I HOPE
