I was so excited at my purchase of a wooden carving that I had to take a photo of the man who made me pay so much for it!
It has been a couple of days since our last blog entry - we have been quite busy. Friday dawned beautiful and sunny, with us planning to visit Green Market Square to do some souvenir shopping and then head down to the Waterfront to catch a ferry to Robben Island.

These plans were temporarily put on hold by a visit to Liezl's apartment by the plainclothes police. Although Liezl was reticent to let them in, she eventually did after seeing their ID and badges. They sat on the couch and explained that they wanted to do a stakeout from our bedroom. They wanted video and photographic evidence of drug deals in the car park opposite our building. Liezl was unsure and wanted to phone their head office but they told her she couldn't because there was too much internal corruption! They attempted to ease her concern by saying, 'It's alright. You've let us in now. If we were going to do anything, we would have done it by now'. Despite our misgivings, everything went smoothly, they got their footage and we left the apartment alive. Casey, however, was not very happy and said that you should never ever let the

police into your house!! Different to home, huh.

We finally made it to the markets and spent an hour bargaining for carved wooden animals, bookends and bowls (which James then had to carry for the rest of the day). From there we went to the Waterfront only to be told that the ferry to Robben Island had to be booked in advance. We made a booking for Monday and headed to the Two Oceans Aquarium. Lots of fishies! We saw some really bizarre creatures including spider crabs (ick) and moray eels (thinking of you, Catriona). After seeing so many beautiful sea creatures, we had fish and chips for lunch...

We left the Waterfront and headed back to Casey and Liezl's to prepare for our trip to Pringle Bay. Liezl's family has a holiday home that we could stay in and make trips up the coast from there. The drive there was fantastic - stunning cliffs and escarpments were our view out the window for most of the drive. We stopped at a truck stop for dinner where I had greasy pizza and James had a greasy burger pie (burger patty in a pie). Not a good idea. Poor

This one is for you, Catriona
James spent the rest of Friday night in a bad way. Our first food poisoning episode for the trip!! Apart from the trips to the bathroom, I knew that James was really sick when he only had two WeetBix for breakfast instead of his usual five.

Despite James' being a bit off colour, we still made the trip up to Hermanus on Saturday - whale central. Hermanus has a bay in which Southern Right whales come to play and rest during their migration. We saw SIX whales! It was fantastic. As we drove in to the bay I saw a whale tail splashing down into the water - I was so excited I hurt my finger whilst bashing it against the window to show everyone the whale. Yes Mum, I am an awkward child.

We took many photos of the whales but were amused to discover that our eyesight and our zoom lenses differ considerably. We won't be putting our photos on the blog because all you will see will be a big expanse of blue with a tiny black dot on it.

Saturday night was spent playing cards as the braai (bbq) was cancelled due to

James and I enjoyed this little boys fascination with the sharks
the extreme wind and stormy weather. This continued on Sunday so we headed back to Cape Town a bit earlier than planned.

This man would walk around and use his horn to signal where the whales had been sighted. We just used the crowds to figure out where the whales were.

Ok, so I will put in one photo. Black dot on blue expanse.

Nice pics
Looks like the whale watching place you guys went to was great. Spectacular view from the holiday house! Glad to hear that you're not missing out on greasy burgers and Weetbix. You can't let experiencing another culture totally change you.

You had to take a picture of the eels...
It's official, I can never go to Africa with eels that size. They are the grossest, most disgusting looking things I have ever seen. However, that being said I did eat one in Vietnam... that's Eels 1, Cat 1. LOVING the pictures guys... keep 'em coming!
