New York, what to say...
We started our trip meeting up with Niki (Teri's sister) in the T-Dot airport and the party started from there. We flew into NYC, taking in the aerial view of Manhattan at sunset on our way in. Once there, we checked into our perfect little apartment in the East Village (an area very similar to Vancouver's Commercial Drive - a little grungy, with bar after bar after bar - so we felt right at home), and went out and hit the town on a quest to find the perfect 'pie', with a decent buzz on already, haha. New York felt extremely familiar, as if we had already been there having seen everything on TV beforehand. But then you get there and its so much more.
We spent just three days there, walking around each neighborhood, with Niki as our tour guide, stopping to see all of the tourist must-see's, oh ya and we walked...we walked a lot (my flip flops got a good workout - must have put about 40km on those bad boys by the end) and that was a perfect way to see it and be immersed in it; even better is
that we totally lucked out with the weather - nothing but sunshine for our whole trip there which was sweet!!! The three of us spent the first day in Uptown seeing sights like central park (drinking our 25oz beer-garitas, than spending half the times standing in line to use a washroom), times square and grand central station, content on just walking around, checking off the tourist norms! We took in the sunset at the "Top of the Rock", getting a sweet view from the top of the Rockefeller building, seeing all of Manhattan, then back down to Times Square at night which is a totally different experience than during the day for sure.
The next day was downtown, closer to our apartment in the East Village; that day spent (again walking) wandering through the smaller neighborhoods and shops of Greenwich Village, Chelsea (checking out the Chelsea Market), West Village, over to the 911 memorial, through the financial district and working our way to a sunset walk over the Brooklyn Bridge to Brooklyn bridge view park so I could make Teri and Niki freeze to death for a couple of hours while I took photos of the Manhattan skyline at
night- they were troopers, it got cold at night! They were fine, they each had giant cans of beer to tide them over.
Its a busy place and that's kind of the fun of it, the energy of New York is contagious. The people were the best part surprisingly. It was great seeing such diversity, walking down streets hearing many languages at once not knowing who is a tourist and who is not and finally hearing that famous New Yorker accent, fuggetaboutit - love it! And the food, holy shit the food, lets just say we ate our way through the city as well. Bagels (cured lox with horseradish cream cheese Mmmmm), pizza and of course Katz Deli, the famous landmark of the East Village with 5lb pastrami and corned beef sandwiches - a highlight for sure (and then rolled ourselves home having sweet meat dreams that evening).
Overall, I was surprised at how much I liked NYC. This was a Teri thing for sure wanting to come here for sure but my opinion was changed, not normally liking big cities, this one grows on ya!
We said goodbye to Niki and flew to Morocco (10lbs heavier)...stay
tuned for more on that!
