Waiting for our ride to the airport, we saw our friends who were in the jungle! They said they did get lost and hiked and hiked up steep trails (um with elephants) and finally arrived at elephant heaven. Acres and acres of beautiful mountains and valleys of lush vegetation, perfect for elephant retirement. They said totally worth it. I was so glad to hear about their trip. As we prepared to leave,I can't help be so happy and proud that Dave took a week out of his vacation to take his gypsy wife half way around the world to scoop elephant poop, and prepare meals and work in the oppressive sun and go help out the Thai kids at the school along side me.aling with enjoying a vegetarian diet for the week (difficult for my carnivore ) I am feeling blessed to say the least!
The van (of course on Thai time) showed up 25 minutes late, and we have a plane to catch! We shared a ride with Erin, and kept on saying "we need to hurry to the airport" he would laugh and smile and ask us if we needed to stop and use the bathroom. Then he went to drop off Erin (in no rush at all) off first! I am trying to figure out in my mind what to do if we miss the plane, and the ferry and oh crap! I just need him to step on it! We made our flight with 4 minutes to spare, whew! The travel gods have smiled apon us! Car to ferry and ferry to PARADISE! I can't even believe how beautiful this island and resort are! Now spending a week with a mostly cold shower in a very modest room with a toilet that kind of flushed for a week before was a perfect way to really appreciate some luxurious living! Checked out the property and had a lovely snack at the end of this long pier that leads from the property to the sea. Swam a bit and walked the beach where we found... Three or four awesome beach shack looking "restaurants" with fresh seafood and fish out front and a grill going... That is where we will be found this week, some authentic local flavor! It is a Muslim island so you can only get alcohol at the resorts. I am wondering if there are any other Muslim things we need to know about. Also we saw a sign about and a couple of HUGE jellyfish washed up on shore.... Could put a crimp in my ocean swimming, hmm. Dinner at the beach side shack where we picked our own fish and they grilled it right up for us!we sat on plastic chairs with plastic tables and they used toilet paper for napkins... (Not all that effective ) but our dinners were so good! My first head on fish. The is a nice warm breeze here at night so the bugs are non existent, there is a wild resort of crazy partying Asians next door (lots of karaoke and bright colored flashing lights, very different from our quiet, teak buildings built into the side of the mountain.
Speaking of the side of the mountain, they have all of these "wooden car" trucks that bring you up or down the mountain when you want to go to your room or down to the main area. They are init actual wooden cars, but Toyota trucks painted wood grain... It's kind of funny. You wait wait along the road for one to pick you up.
At night for turn down service they light some sort of incense in your room that smells like eucalyptus and spa.... Ahhhj
