Wednesday morning walking down to the main building where coffee and breakfast await, accompanied by the cutest of Thai dogs that take it apon themselves to escort you everywhere with a wagging tail and big Thai dog smile. There are hundreds of butterflies dancing in and around the trees making it a magical walk down the dirt road. One of those moments I will tell you, I really tried to put it in the permanent memory bank for later use while standing in line at the dmv . Our job this morning is to prepare the food for the elephants. It is a good job today! Hanging in the kitchen, out of the oppressive heat, washing watermelon and squash and chopping them up for the elephant. The old ladies with no teeth eat rice and banana balls (when eles age they loose their last set of teeth so they need soft food) it was a fun morning. After we got to feed a few elephant and learned a little more about them. One could see in this little group, one blinded by abuse. The sighted elephant made sure her friend always knew where she was so she didn't get scared. Elephants take friendship very seriously. In the afternoon we worked on the firewall, clearing a path up the mountain in case of fire, so it would not spread (this would be classified as a NOT fun job in the 100 plus temps.) It was briefer then expected and at the base of the mountain were three elephants hanging out in the forest and we stayed with them a while. The mahout seemed to be in the forest with his mom, wife and baby, and they all sat under the tree watching the eles graze and hang out. I couldn't help think what a life that must be, to have all day long to be with the people closest to you in nature, surrounded by elephants.... It couldn't be any different then western life. Then we went to see the 450+ dogs to see if one whispered "I belong to you" ... There are so many dogs, and they just wanted to be snuggled and loved, trying to figure out who Sea-B and Eros would love as much as us. Still in negotiations, to be continued. Now, around 5pm, sitting on the upper deck that looks over the park, watching the eles be tucked in for the night, dogs and cats run around and the mahouts play a game of pick up soccer, having a Chang beer of all things, after dinner we went back to the Thai ladies for another hour long foot massage , sitting next to Dave, thinking, this is a very good day
