Northern Thailand was as close as I could get.

I had a pretty good day. I woke up and decided to another tour around Mae Sot. It's like a storybook... everything I have read is coming to life. I am just beginning to grasp the crazy diveristy of this city. The Thai, Burmese, Karen with their face paint, Muslms near the Muslim quarter, Buddhists near the Wats... crazy.

I have also included some pictures of my accommodations. I bought a durian today in the neverending market. A durian is this spikey really smelly fruit that I was told to get although my housemates now hate me. For more information on the durian you can visit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durian. I put my picture below. I'll tell you how the experience goes tomorrow....

I had pumpki curry for lunch at Candian Dave's... amazing. Only about 50 cents for really good pumpkin curry with chicken... the prices here are much cheaper then Bangkok. I then came home and proceeded to read some more of my cheezo law thriller that some really cool girl gave me in Hanoi. Apparently there is a book exchange that I past on Th. Intharakiri (the main street) today that was closed that also offers Thai classes... I'll have to attempt to exchange my books there. Although Thai isn't too helpful here in Mae Sot... most people speak either Burmese or Karen especially in the clinic...

Went to the night market with Megan. She;s really cool - A med student from Australia volunteering at the clinic for five weeks for her final rotation. We ate dinner at the night market (there is a day marlet where I bought my Durian and a seperate night market which has only food) for about 50 cents - we at at the "Thai Fired Noodle shop"... yes Fired not fried... English mistake. It was 2 dollarsfor pad thai and a large beer and was amazingly good. For dinner we had this coconut mil concotion for 5 baht (about 12 cents) where you can pick what flavors you want inside - there was melon, black sticjy rice, corn, and these weird jello tea ball thigs lkike the ones they put in bubble tea.. anyways they mix it all with cocunut milk and sugar syrup in a bowl and its really good. We then went to Crocodile Tear, one of the hopping bars in

town. Okay by hopping I mean where the Western NGO workers go. And on a Saturday night at about 10:30 there were 5 of us.... but I was in good company so it was all good. Apparently there are good banana pancakes for breakfast near outr house and I have to bring my clothes in to be washed.

That's about all. Mae Sot is indeed a quiet town... although the downtown is bigger then I thought it still winds up early basically after the day market ends and there is not much to do.

Looking forward to starting the clinic.

You think they hate you now!
Wait till you cut it open! You should probably do that outside, and be very careful, they are hard to cut without getting pricked by the barbs. Once you open it you will appreciate the quadrupled intensity of the aroma. The goal is to get to the seeds, which are surrounded by a creamy slimey substance. That is what you eat. The easiest way is to just put the seed in your mouth and kind of suck the creamy stuff off, then pitch the seed. You will be tasting it for a while as it comes back many times through burps and it eminates from your pores like garlic. Enjoy, gotta try it once, you may even grow to like them! Miss you, will email you seperately....
