Foggy morning
At Mustang Island SP, TX Sat, 11 Jan, 2014
After last night’s rain, it was nice to wake to sunshine. It was an easy drive through Lake Charles, LA, and on to Houston. The traffic through Houston was surprisingly heavy for a Saturday. We still don’t know if it was construction or just lots of cars that caused the backups. We drove down Hwy 59 to SW Houston with the intention of going by and seeing our first house there. The main road down, Bissonet, didn’t look at all familiar. What had been scrub lands and cow pastures, were now strip malls and apartment buildings. We couldn’t remember the name of the street that connected to ours, but some road names seemed familiar. We never did find that house. The streets we went down were full of apartments or houses. We finally gave up looking. We did google the address when we stopped for the night, and the house is there. The picture wasn’t clear, but the house was recognizable. We never did find out the name of the street we wanted, but we aren’t going back anyway. The neighborhood was not what it had been.
We drove down to Enid, TX, where we
planned to stay at Lake Texana SP. It was late when we arrived and the gate was locked, so we went across the road to Brackenridge Park, CG & Arena. There was no one there either, other than cowboys practicing roping in the parking lot. We couldn’t find where to register, so we just found a spot (out of about 50 empty sites) and set up. The electric boxes were locked, so we just dry camped. We felt nice and secure, knowing there were cowboys around. We think there was a roping competition or exhibition at the arena because there were a lot of horse trailers in the other lot and we did see people riding horses around.

It was another beautiful morning as we drove down to Corpus Christi and then across to Mustang Island State Park, just north of Padre Island. It was pretty windy throughout the afternoon, but calmed down by dark. The surrounding dunes sheltered us pretty well. The campground was pretty much a big parking lot, but they had hot showers with plenty of water pressure. Kerry got out my bicycle so I could ride down to
the showers, but the tires were pretty low on air, making for a difficult ride. We listened to the waves on the beach all night, a really nice sound.

The morning started foggy, but cleared fairly rapidly. We broke camp and drove down to Padre Island National Seashore for a quick look and a stamp/patch. We stopped by the campground and decided to stay for the day and night. The beach was beautiful white sand, fairly hard packed. The wind was still pretty strong and was blowing the tops off the incoming waves. Again we were sheltered by the dunes, but we could see the water. We walked out the pier and Kerry took off his shoes and walked along the beach, picking up a few shells. We met really nice people there, too, and had fun chatting with them.

We had a nice quiet drive out of Padre Island and Corpus. The traffic was light and the weather sunny and warm. Oh, blessed relief! It was wonderful to enjoy temperatures in the seventies. To avoid San Antonio and its traffic, we
took a cutoff from Pleasanton, TX to Hondo, then on to Uvalde, where we are stopped for the night. After a quick trip to Walmart, we are set for the next few days. HouseHHhhhH
