Christmas in October
Thank you mom for all the extra stuff, honestly don't need most of it but "just in case" Surpirse! (Well for Petra atleast) My Oma, her sister Nane, and my Aunt Andrea were knocking at the door! Petra's birthday is coming up so they planned to come visit for the week since Andrea had work in Edmonton anyways! Unknowingly Petra was forced to open the door still wearing pjs and unshowered, she truly had no idea. They were in town for 5 days which gave me lots of time to chat and catch up! My lovely mother made sure I won't starve, freeze or spend any extra money by sending along a whole suitcase of stuff with Andrea. Yippy, Christmas in October 😊 I sorted through the stuff which covered the entire floor and sent back everything that was unneeded. I loved hearing that my family is doing well. One of the nights we went out to the Cactus club with everyone (including Preeti and Sonny!) and had a wonderful meal to celebrate Petra's upcoming birthday. One morning I came upstairs to be told, "we are going to corrupt you" from my Oma and Nane... Hmm. Turns out we were going to the casino! I had never been to a casino so it was quite the experience. The River
Cree Casino didn't seem to like me very much though, but loved Nane! Both Oma and I only played with 20$ and at first I wasn't doing bad ($21.70 was as high as I got) but then lost it all. Hmpf. Nane on the other hand won 80 bucks right off the bat! She ended up scoring big a few times and left with close to 200 dollars. Maybe this is a sign that I shouldn't gamble often, ... I also hate to lose so a trip to the casino has potential to end badly. Oma and Nane introduced me to a cool consignment store full of funky clothes and jewelry, my sister Bianca would have loved it! You can learn a lot from your elders, well I sure did this week. I had several great conversations with my Oma and Nane about the war, their ways of living as children, and their view on today's society. We live in two different worlds on the same planet. They are both truly remarkable people and have been through the toughest of times. My Opa is rich with knowledge as well, I should really invest my time in spending a week just
for story time when I return. I was taught abit about Pol Pot, leader of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. He has killed approximately 1.7 - 2.5 million people in brutal ways whether it be by torturing them, or simply disease. He had an area the size of a soccer field called the killing fields where horrible unthinkable things went on. I was shocked that I had never even heard of this, or Pol Pot, and I almost feel sick thinking of all the terrible things that go on everyday but will never be spoken about. "Ignorance is bliss". Andrea came over one night and we played canasta, a card game that I lost at (in my defence it was my first time playing). Andrea brought a pumpkin pie that I single handedly consumed over the course of a day and a half (Nane had a little piece). Mmmmm pumpkin pie. I love hearing stories about Petra, Andrea and my mom when they were kids, apparently they were quite the rascals! I'm glad I got to visit with my family for alittle while, they're always such a blast. Only complaint: the most uncomfortable couch was my bed for the week
and sleep was scarce. Thank you nova for head butting me at 4am, much appreciated.
