Sunset at Cable Beach Derby to Broome
We had heard from quite a few people that they had had trouble finding accommodation in Broome, so as we woke this morning in Derby, we decided to have a little ring around to see if we could find accommodation. Well, this proved to be a very fruitless exercise as some caravan parks had nothing available, others wouldn’t know until 10am, and others don’t take bookings, it’s first in best dressed for any vacancies. We decided we would just run the gauntlet and take pot luck. And to top it all off, the road from Derby to Broome was closed yesterday due to a serious accident on the Willare Bridge, a fuel tanker and a cattle truck had collided on the bridge, luckily it was not fatal for human life, but apparently around 200 cattle were either killed or had to be put down.
First stop when arriving in Broome, the Broome caravan park, fortunately we were able to get 2 unpowered sites. We weren’t going to bother trying to find a powered site, and were happy to settle for these unpowered sites, even though they were about ½ mile from the toilets!!!

Jellyfish at sunset on Cable Beach Once set up, Jane & I made our way to the Information centre, the boys tried to find a car wash, the cars were disgusting after coming off the Gibb River Road and we weren’t able to wash them in Derby. We want to make our way to Middle Lagoon for 7 nights from the Wednesday, this would give us 2 nights in Broome before heading off. Well, even the best laid plans can go a little pear shaped from time to time, we could only get a powered site at Middle Lagoon from the Friday. Oh well, that would have to do I guess.
Not all bad, our trip to Broome, not by good management, but by good luck, coincided with the staircase to the moon, this only happens once a month for three days, AND to coincide with this natural phenomenon, which occurs when the full moon rises over the exposed mudflats of Roebuck Bay at extremely low tide creating the optical illusion of a staircase reaching up to the moon, there is a night market on two of these nights, because our trip to Middle Lagoon had now been delayed, this meant we would be in

Staircase to the moon Broome town for this, yay, Jane & I were excited, the boys, not really, but they came along, even if it was only for the food!
We decided it would be a lovely end to the day to go to Cable Beach and watch the sunset, then make a wy down to view the staircase to the moon on the first night, because it was the earliest, it was an hour later each night, and after the viewing, grab a pizza for tea. It would seem, that 90% of the tourists in Broome at this time had the same idea, there were literally hundreds of people all vying for the best spot to grab a snap shot of this phenomena, and grab a bite for tea. Standing outside the pizza shop, which is where the drive through for Maccas started we were well entertained by people trying to make their way through the McDonalds drive through against the traffic!!!!

This morning Jane & I are setting off shopping, without the boys, retail therapy is not something these boys are not good at, so best we leave them to their own devices this morning.
It was such

Dinosaur footprints a pleasure to be able to shop, without somebody asking questions like, “what do want to look at that for”, “are you nearly done” “where else do you want to go”! A little bit of retail therapy for us, and they also enjoyed some boy time visiting camping stores, auto elecs and the boy shops.

Today was a bit of a treat day, we joined the pearl luggers tour this morning, this was a great insight to the early days of Broome, and the dangerous life of a pearl diver.
A pearl tour would not be complete without some shopping for a nice pearl, lucky for Pete, I couldn’t find anything that I was really happy with, for the money I was prepared to spend. Pearls within the high thousands are not for me!
Out for lunch and then back to camp for an afternoon lazing around the pool.

Up early this morning, we need to catch the early tide to view the Dinosaur footprints.
These footprints date back 120 million years can be seen around the Broome area at certain low tides.
The prints are scattered around Roebuck

Coral on the reef Bay and along the coast, some can be reached by foot at Gantheaume Point when tides are below 2.16cm.
After a late brekky, it was time to go shopping to gather supplies for our week at Middle Lagoon; we needed to make sure we had enough food to back up plan A, which was fish and more fish!
After spending the day fluffing around, I think we are ready to head off for the week.

Barbecue
I know its in really poor taste (pardon the pun), but that accident would have been an awesome opportunity for a cracker of a barbecue! sounds like you are having an absolute blast. Don't those footprints make you feel just slightly insignificant in the whole scheme of things?? am very glad to hear you got some lovely retail therapy time. Keep the updates coming - I'm loving them. hope you are having the best time ever, even though it means I miss you so so so so much. arvo cuppa just isn't the same. We're all good here and I'm really looking forward to seeing you on your return. many beers must be had. take it easy and travel safe nic xx
