Mitta Mitta River

"Go on Dave, Greg will drive us 20kms up the road to put the kayak in, Robyn will mind Lilly and it's all down stream," I beg. Dave's heels are dug into Timbuktu and the strain in his face etched concern and fear. We are only beginners and the river is up quite high and moving quickly. I continue, "All the more reason to go now, it will be easier paddling."

Off on our 20km journey. Oops it was 20kms by road. Check out the map, ended up being 60kms by river. OMG

It was a long bend to get to this spot. I'd nearly had enough already. It was only 20 minutes. Dave thought I'd whinge the whole way, so I stayed very, very quiet.

Serene and pretty. Back to nature.
Rough WaterRough Water
Rough Water

Ok it doesn't look that rough but there is no way I could use a camera when we were amongst it. We learnt to steer and turn and straighten. Team work was impressive. Except Dave wanted to be at the back to be in control, that meant I ploughed through the water at the front as I was the heaviest. Therefore we had to swap. I kept steering the wrong way. Oh well, it's like map reading.

We were thinking we'd have a morning tea break then be back at camp soon. Not to happen.

Our shoulders and bum were becoming quite sore. I still didn't whinge ....

Is camp soon?

We were hoping camp would be around each bend. It wasn't so we had to commit to the river and there was no other way but forward. We hadn't packed lunch either.

Stretching helped keep me going. Still no whinging BUT Dave spat the dummy. I remained calm. I couldn't let him know I too wanted to give up, find a farm, ask for food and a lift back.

Cattle? Farm?

We did have a choice but didn't know how far we would have to walk to a farm. Enjoy the moment. Quite a lesson.

We did have to dodge branches, rocks and logs. Luckily the kayak remained stable.

We could see the road and knew it wasn't far.

People came rushing down to the river to see the kayakers that had returned. 6 hours on the water for beginners was quite a feat. A hot shower, a wine and a huge sleep made it all worthwhile.
