Well, I've never heard of him

All you have to do to feel really ignorant is to travel to a country where you know a little of their history and almost nothing about their artists, musicians and writers. Today another incident happened that gave me that familiar feeling of ignorance.

As we walked through the Royal Gardens today we suddenly found ourself in front of a memorial to Julius Zeyer. I do not know about any of you who are reading this travelblog, but I had never heard of this man. I assumed from the statue that he was a writer. I must confess this was merely a guess to myself on this.

Since returning to the seminary I have checked and indeed Mr. Zeyer was a writer who lived from 1841 to 1901 and that he wrote epic poetry based on ancient and medieval legends of many lands and that he wrote a semiautobiographical novel entitled Jan Maria Plojhar that deals with the tragic nature of the artist. He also wrote some unsuccessful lyric poetry for the theater. And that is all I know about the man.

Nancy and Bill, I have really enjoyed your journals. They have been very informative and fun to view. You should write books. We miss you both. We'll be seeing you in a few weeks. Have a safe trip back. Carol Lerian - Carol Lerian
