Our first full day in Ireland started with a bang, a cold one. Judy was the only one who got a warm shower, Chester got the second shower and it went cold about 4 minutes in. Gene and Kirsten had nothing and did not like it. This was not good start for the driver of the trip. We got over the cold showers and headed for the day’s activities. Kirsten did a great job yesterday driving from the airport to our lodging and this is quite a feat since the roads are crazy narrow and sometimes they are not even wide enough for two cars to pass each other. It gets a little scary coming around blind turns.
Gene rode shot gun and as everyone knows, if you are shot gun, you are the navigator and must help the driver. This is important especially when in a foreign country, driving on the wrong side of the road, with a manual transmission and narrow roads you cannot pull over on. Well, let’s just say about 15 minutes into the drive to the castle Gene and Kirsten were yelling at each other and Gene threw the map into the back seat. This
Milk Market
Ladies buying bread arrangement just did not go well. There may have been a few F bombs thrown around in the car, you can guess who was swearing.
Our first stop was in Limerick at the Milk Market. It was a farmer’s market in the center of town and was very quaint and tasty. We were able to walk around the market and sample tasty treats, cheeses and breads. There were tons of locals and tourists. The weather was ok; it was not raining, YET. Be bought up some bread, cheese and fruit for the rest of our stay.
After the market Chester was now the new navigator. The drive went smoothly after that. As both driver and navigator have done this before and know how to handle the driving situations. We headed for the Bunratty Castle and Folk Park. The weather was getting a little better and we had times where the sun was out. The castle was impressive and dates back to around 1425. We toured the castle and the grounds. It included an entire village of homes, shops and barns. There were farm animals and tools all over the place. The rain came and went throughout the entire
tour. It wasn’t too bad though, since we could get to shelter quickly. The grounds and gardens were lush, green, and beautiful. It took an hour or two to get through the entire place. After the castle we hit a few shops and bought some souvenirs. The rain was getting heavier and we were getting hungrier. Gene had heard good things about Durty Nelly’s Pub. We had yet another great meal and a couple of beers.
Before our food comas set in, we decided to head home. We had a bunch of fresh fruit, cheeses and bread in the trunk of the car for snacks tonight. Chester and Kirsten did an excellent job of getting the group home. We may have had to turn around in the middle of the road, once or maybe twice, but Kirsten got us home safely. Our evening included a little TV, cheese and wine for the evening. Kirsten and Judy were trying to plan out our plans for the next day. There may have been a few more F bombs flying around with these conversations as well. The next two days will be filled with more castles, caves and tours. Let’s just say
our next two days will be jammed packed.
