Thom -We left York on Wednesday for Durham driving up through the Yorkshire Dales. During this drive we saw some really random stuff. In one village we drove past this huge cross on a hillside. Another random sight was a white horse on a hill in chalk. We also stopped at an abbey. This is turning into quite a religious and historical trip without it meaning to be. I forgot to say that we had visited Marson Moor where there was a battle during the Civil War and also Stamford Bridge where we defeated the Norweigians in 1066 whilst in Yorkshire. During our jouney we have also seen Rivaulx Abbey.
Whilst in Durham we went to walk around the cathedral and castle but there was not much else there. At the cathedral there was the Sanctuary knocker where criminals knocked to ask for 37 days sanctuary to decide their fate - death or exile? I did get some funny looks from some Japanese as I knocked on it.
On our way to Newcastle we saw the Angel of the North, which is the most looked at sculpture in the world apparently. But what the guide doesn't say is that it also

Newcastle was okay. Lots of bridges and obviously the castle. There was also the cathedral which Kayleigh really liked. In Newcastle there was a really random fat white house by the art musuem. It just had a TV inside with a film of the house asking 'Am I Art?' and 'Are Fat things art?'. This did scare lots of the kids inside. The Gateshead bridge was a fantastic piece of engineering as it tilts up in the air to let the boats under. Had lunch near Hadrians Wall by a resevior but lunch was cut short by a nasty swan who took a liking for Kayles' Salt and Vinegar crisps.
We were overall a bit let down by the north east and this was not helped by the fact that the campsites were rubbish with really dirty facilities especially in Newcastle. We did have a nice Chinese at Kayles aunties house and this was a rather pleasant Thursday evening. Hopefully Scotland has a lot more to offer!

How can you have missed GY off your North East trip. I expect a pic of the dock tower on your next blog. And also Blundell Park.
