Port Lockroy – Neko Harbour --- Monday, January 28, 2013 The Fram did have a stop yesterday Sunday but the rain and snow were heavy and we decided to take it easy and not risk my camera getting too wet. There was a small boat tour around the icebergs in the Lemaire Channel that would take people closer to sites, but it was so wet and windy that 2 of the people that went their cameras no longer work.
Port Lockroy is a former British base that has been restored to its former state in the 1950’s. It also has a post office and a store, so it is the most visited spot in the Antarctic. The British have formed a trust to try and restore former bases to former state; the store is one of the sources for the trust. We did our share to help the trust with some purchases. The base was originally abandoned for several years until the trust started to restore it to its former condition. One change that resulted as a result of being abandoned is that penguins now have nests under the buildings.
Neko Harbour is interesting since the bay is
surrounded on all sides by mountains and alpine glaciers. Our ship the Fram showed its maneuverability as it twisted and turned to slip between glaciers to enter the harbor. Again a large colony of penguins, but the main attraction for this stop was a climb to the top of the glacier and then to slide down one side. The slide starts out at a reasonable pace, picking up speed and then you come to the cliff and the speed and thrill when you go over the cliff beats anything I have ever experienced on any ride in an amusement part.
