The morning I woke up in Hue before my motorbike journey to Hoi An, I was not really feeling 100% and actually had a really runny nose. Sure enough, by the time I got to my hostel in Hoi An, I knew I had a full blown cold and I was not to happy about that. While I blame it on the freezing train ride I had a couple days before, I know that my rather intense travel schedule the past week or so has left me a lot less rested and on lots of buses, trains, etc which are just breeding grounds for a cold. But I could not have picked a better city to get sick in.
Hoi An is also a UNSECO place where the charming downtown is perfect for strolling, browsing and shopping, or just people watching. Only 4 km from the city center are gorgeous beaches as well which combine to make the area perfect for a little R&R. The only downside of this perfect resort town is that as such, it is rather expensive by Vietnam standards and is really difficult to find cheap hostels. So instead, I splurged a little and
went for a single room at a two star hotel that had a nice pool and included a delicious buffet breakfast. It was a perfect place for me to shake off my cold.
If I felt needed one, or just wanted a cool souvenir, I would have also gone for a custom made suit, which is Hoi An is also known for. Every others shop is eager for your business and want to make you a tailor fitted anything. Many people come here and stock up with anywhere from 2 to 20 suits, shirts, or dresses for bargain prices. While it wouldn't be a bad idea for me to get one, I both didn't really have the budget or room for one (yet alone 20!) Instead I decided to simply spend my time recouping on the beach and wandering the scenic and traffic free town. Happy to report, I am almost back to full operation for my journey through Cambodia next after a quick stop in Ho Chi Minh city.
