It’s me Billy here again with the next bit of my blog continued. I think the last time I wrote my blog we were halfway across the Gibb which is a 600 km dirt road that goes across the Kimberley at the top of Western Australia. It is very rough and it was Dad’s idea to do it.
Mum was scared of breaking down and was never really keen to do the Gibb. She said if we did break down out the middle of nowhere she would take me and James and fly back to the Gold Coast and that Dad would have to finish the around Australia trip on his own. Dad said it wasn’t much of a threat and that he might even loosen some of the wheel nuts – whatever that means.
Anyway, we didn’t break down at all. We did have to leave the caravan in Kununurra because it was so rough and we stayed in a tent for four nights which I found really fun. We went to heaps of Gorges. My favourites were Manning Gorge, Bell Gorge and Galvan’s Gorge. James loved swimming in the gorges too. At Manning
Gorge we all had to swim across a river to get there and at Galvan’s Gorge I dived off a ledge into the water. Our last night in a tent we played a great game called Charades around the campfire. Mum and Dad both argued about who was the best player although Dad definitely has more natural acting ability than Mum. Mum is a better dancer and drawer than dad but I am going to teach Dad how to draw one day.
On our last day we went to a place called Tunnel Creek. This is a creek that actually runs through a mountain. You walk along the creek with a torch because it is pitch black in some places and the water is up to your waist. There were also bats! Mum stayed behind because she gets claustrophobic but Dad took me and James in. I was scared at first but Dad let me hold the torch and we walked all the way through the mountain and back. It was awesome but the scariest walk I’ve ever been on. Mum and Dad called me the Gibb River king because of how well I roughed it
Next we stayed in safari tents in Fitzroy Crossing for a couple of nights. We had real showers and a pool and we went on a cruise up yet another Gorge – Gehike Gorge where there were heaps of freshwater crocodiles. I spotted the most.
Then we went back to Kununurra to get the caravan. We headed west the next day and stayed at the Bungle Bungles. Caravan Park. We left the caravan in the park and drove to the Bungles along a really rough road. We saw Cathedral Gorge and Echidna Chasm. Echidna Chasm was a high risk area and we told mum to be careful because she loves taking foolish risks. We teased mum so much that she dobbed on us to a complete stranger who told us to go easy on her. Then we saw another sign that said High Risk Area – Falling Rocks and started teasing her again. Mum said she hopes that Fred turns out to be a girl to restore the balance. I did actually love the Bungles and enjoyed looking at them even though I don’t usually like walks – they looked like beehives.
Mum and
Dad met the people next to us at the Bungles. One bloke was called Eric and he all these little inventions around his caravan – like in built freezers and other stuff. That night we went round a tour campfire but James went missing. We found him in the toilet block and went home.
The next day we headed for Derby. It was a long drive. We were behind Eric the inventor. The car in front of him was blowing smoke out. Mum and Dad were surprised he didn’t have an invention for getting rid of the smoke – like an exhaust fan like on Wacky Races.
We stayed in Derby for a night. Then we went to the wharf the next day where they have enormous 10 metre tides.
Next day we went to Broome for a night and then we left our caravan in Broome and headed for Cape Leveque. We stayed at a place called Middle Lagoon in a tent for 3 nights and caught up with Sue and Boyce our friends. We all loved Middle Lagoon. It was a small bay with shells everywhere. I have never
seen so many shells and so I made shell necklaces for Sue and Boyce. James and I swam in the Lagoon and played footy and cricket with Mum and Dad for hours and hours. We left our gazebo on the beach for 3 days. Then we went to Cape Leveque for a night and then back to Broome for a week.
I loved Broome – it is a big city with McDonalds and supermarkets. We did lots of stuff in Broome – we swam at Cable Beach nearly every day, Dad and I played mini golf and I rode the camels with Mum and James along Cable Beach. We went to the markets and went to McDonalds. We also went out for tea with the two Tonies who we ran into again. James was up to his old tricks and went missing. He was at the pool table when we found him. He was wrecking someone’s game. Dad went across the road to a bar to watch the second state of origin. I could hear him cheering all the way from the caravan park. Whenhe got home he was very happy that NSW had won. He told
us twenty times did we know that NSW had won until we told him to shoosh up and go to bed.
I have also been getting into doing lots of science experiments in Broome – like making geodes from eggshells and making crystals form on string. Yes Broome was a great place with heaps to do but tomorrow we head west towards Port Headland to continue the trip. Talk to you then!

Loved the photo of Fred chillin Billy! And your Dad saying he might loosen the wheel nuts. Remember the book I gave you once "My Dad Thinks He's Funny"? It still applies. I also liked your Mum's comment about the zebra rock platter "this is going straight to the pool room" !! You have to be a bit older to get that one. Really loving the blog mate, you are doing a fantastic job. Lots of love
