Toyed with staying another night in this hotel (really nice with beautiful room overlooking Lake Huron), but rooms
doubled in price tonight because of the holiday coming up so decided to stick to our original plan. Up and out for the 9:30 ferry. True to form we just made it! Short ride over to Mackinac – fun riding on the ferry. The steward took a shine to Freddy and gave him some ribbing on the ride over. We decided to do the package deal that included ferry ride, 2hr carriage ride and entrance to Fort Mackinac, so when we arrived, we scooted down the main street to the carriage place. What a very quaint place island! Horse and carriage and bicycles everywhere. Of course, there was also a lot of the stuff that horses leave behind as well! Luckily, the odor wasn’t too horrible. Our first tour guide, Mike, was just OK, but the second one (Nate) who drove the 3-horse carriage was fabulous. Very personable and informative. The tour was definitely the way to go since we needed to leave the island on the 3:30 ferry to drive up to Pictured Rocks for a sunset cruise. The Fort was neat
but we didn’t have much time there. The views were incredible, though. The weather was fantastic with blue skies and calm seas. The only part that wasn’t great was the amount of people on the streets. Very crowded for shopping and eating. Did manage to get some delicious fudge at Joann’s. Fudge shops are EVERYWHERE! Got to see them make it on the marble tables, fun to see them throw the butter into the kettle and have it slide back out to catch! Made the ferry and got to sit up top this time. Fantastic! Now 2 hrs to drive to Munising, MI to see the Pictured Rocks.
Arrived in plenty of time for the 7:30 cruise, but went for ice-cream without thinking of the lines to be able to sit on top of the boat. By the time we got in line, there was no way we would be able to get anywhere near the top, so we decided to take the 8:00 ferry instead. This put us very late into the next hotel since we were staying 45 minutes away, but it was well worth it. The 8:00 cruise was still at sunset time and was way less
crowded. We were able to sit up top and move around for pictures very easily. The weather was fantastic with clear skies most of the way through. The pictured rocks were unbelievable! With the sun coming off of them, they were really something to see. The minerals in the rocks from the run-off water coming from the land is what "colors" them. the cruise was 2.5 hrs so it was dark by the time we got back to dock. The ride back was chillier - glad we brought sweatshirts! - but also interesting in that we had a full moon, fireworks occasionally from shore and heat lightening in the distance. You didn't know what to look at next
