The Juneau Volunteer Band Wednesday June 27
th, 2012 Taku Harbor to Juneau
Juneau was only 20 miles from Taku Harbor and I could seen the cruise ships before we even entered Gasteneau Channel. We found moorage fairly near downtown and we had just finished tying up when Kira said, “OK, can we find the bookstore now?” We did walk to the downtown area mingling with the thousands of cruise ship folks. Kira found her bookstore, which should keep her occupied until her birthday anyway. The Juneau Volunteer Band played under a gazebo and when they struck up “Stars and Stripes Forever” the crowd gathered, marching, tapping and cheering. We docked in front of “Drumbeat,” the boat I met in Foggy Bay and Dave gave me the lowdown on Juneau.

Weather alternates between dense wet air, thick mist, and just plain rain. I pumped probably 15 gallons of rainwater out of the dinghy which has not been covered. A young fisherman on his boat said that the boat gets used for long lines, netting, crabbing, research and tours. Farmers and fishermen both know a lot about the benefits

The Volendam, a large cruise ship of diversification. Lots of fishing boats are coming and going and as with the other places many are crewed by families - kids, wives, and grandfathers. This business appears to be a generational thing, like farming and many of these “family” boats are pretty big, freshly painted, and well-outfitted. The old derelicts on the dock seem to be single-handed by, um old derelicts. Some of the particular salmon seasons are very short, maybe 24 hours a week.
We resupplied at the A&P. This time we brought a dock cart to haul it all back

Having seen some commercial boats trolling in Gastineau Channel outside the marina, I tried my hand and at least gained some experience single-hand trolling in the rain. Ken and Paula came over for a game of Catch Phrase and a visit. We think about other activities but low clouds and rain dampen our enthusiasm. Our diesel heat runs all day long. Other yachts come in but they stay on their dry boats and we stay on ours.

The Bullfrog Boy fishes in Gastineau Channel. small huffs and puffs the wind pushes the clouds up over the mountains and the first day of July seems brighter.
Kira and I took the dinghy under the bridge under the bridge across Gastineau channel to a downtown dock by the big ships where we met Ken and Patty looked around a little and then brought them back by water. Ken and I went out fishing in the channel first trolling then motor mooching and trying various lures. We had the most fun watching our lures go up and down on the sonar screen.

Kira and I took the bus out to the airport and picked up the rest of her family returning also by bus. After lunch and a rest Kira took her siblings for a quick dinghy ride & then we went with Keith back to town via the water route. We have a long cruise ahead of us tomorrow and we are encouraged by more settled weather.
