On the Dock
Adam and I on the dock next to our hotel. This is right where we saw the shark swim below our feet!!!!! Adam and I are nearing the end of this amazing vacation. Neither one of us wants it to end!!!! We're staying on Ambergris Caye (pronounced key) 4.5 miles north of San Pedro. And only a half mile off the coast line is the second largest barrier reef in the world. We can see the waves crashing on the reef from our room and the water is crystal blue and fairly shallow. Our resort has very different set ups. Our room, called a casita (little house) is 40ft from the ocean and when you open all the doors and windows, the most amazing breeze whooshes through the room. I'm in love with the shower and we took pictures of it for when we can afford a bathroom like it! The resort, Mata Chica, has a maximum occupancy of around 40 people, so everyone who is staying here has gotten to know each other somewhat. It's a very quiet and relaxing ambiance. Minus the mosquitos, it's perfect!
Our days have consisted mostly of swimming, sea kayaking to snorkel at the reef, going into town for dinner, to watch the World Cup, or to shop, napping in hammocks, laying out, and hanging out
Our Casita
This is the tiny "house" that we're staying in. Don't you just love the hammock!! with our new found friends, Will and Colette (who ironically live in Atlanta), and Karalee and Meri (from Charleston and Salt Lake City). Colette is friends with a few of our friends, Holly and Jake for those who know them. It really is a small world!! The 6 of us are a hoot! On wednesday night, one of the guests brought a crab to the bar and was showing us that it doesn't hurt when it pinches. Well, Karalee, being the daredevil that she is, reached toward the crab, who promptly squeezed the heck out of her finger which resulted in her pulling her hand back. I screamed when I realized that the crab's claw was still attached to her finger. The bartender, Leisar, ran around the bar like his pants were on fire to bite the claw off her finger. It was quite possibly the most hilarious thing I have seen since I started this trip. Consequently, this episode invoked a fierce sense of competition as last night, Adam, Will and Leo (our other favorite bartender) went on a quest to find crabs so we could have a crab race. Don't worry it was all humane! I wouldn't have
The Crab Kiss
The reward for Adam's crab who won the race....... :) it any other way. You should have seen the way Adam was marking their backs with chalk. It was hilarious. He has now been nicknamed the "crab whisperer" as he had the ease to mark the crabs and picked the crab who won the race.........it was an awesome night!
While sea kayaking, we have seen loads of tropical fish, many of which I recognize as having been in my dad's fish tank (dad they're free here!) sting rays or eagle rays, the coolest coral I have ever seen and barracuda. I wasn't so keen on that last one. While standing on the dock next door we saw a 3-4 ft nurse shark swimming among the tropical fish. It was really cool. We're going to try to snorkel there today. Adam booked a massage for me and I can't wait!!!!! Tomorrow, Adam heads back to St. Louis and my two friends from work, Kristin and Rani, arrive and we hit the beach and whatever else they want to do! I'm sad to see Adam leave, but am excited to have some girl time too!!!! There are always more adventures to conquer and experiences to have and I'm up for them! (including our engagement and wedding!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHH!!!!)
