So this evening I went on my first ever blind date. And by blind, I mean that I didn't even know I was on a date until I got into the car and it was only I and a girl I was meeting for the first time. Those of you who know me know that I’m an extremely positive person (most of the time), so I’m not going to say that is was not a worthwhile experience. But it was awkward, and I was a bit frustrated with my host mother for arranging such a meeting.

So here’s the scenario. Usually after baseball practice the whole team goes to a local bar and has a beer or two, just relaxing and talking. But somehow I was unable to communicate this to my host mother because she (continually) insisted that Monika would be picking me up from practice and we would be spending the evening together. Monika is the daughter of my host mothers’ boss. My host mother works for Amway, and for those of you who know Amway, Monika’s parents are ‘Rubies’, which means they are high up on the pyramid and have a good amount of money. But that is not the point of all this. Back to the date.
Things were weird from the start. When I walked up to the car, Monika was on her cell phone. She said hello, politely, and I got into the car. I was told she would be coming with a friend, but it was just she. And I thought that my host brother was coming along for the evening, but he wasn’t.

Anyhow, she kept talking on her cell phone. I’m not too big on rules of social interaction, I don’t really care too much how people act or how polite or impolite they are, but in this situation it seemed pretty rude of her to continue to talk on the phone for the next few minutes while I was sitting there in the car. And we had never met before. Then she was off the phone, and we had nothing to talk about. We were headed to my house so that I could shower and change.

As I was getting out of the car at my house, Monika said to me “ok, so you will go quick, ok?” and I said, “well yes, but I need to shower. Are you going to stay in the car?” She nodded her head. I’d assumed she would be coming in and waiting inside. But it was clear that she was not moving, and that I was not going to shower. ‘Suit yourself,’ I thought. And I ran inside, changed clothes, and was back in the car in a few minutes. I didn’t even put on any deodorant (just kidding—I put on deodorant. But I didn’t change my underwear).
I won’t bore you with the details of the evening, but needless to say it was uneventful. Dinner at a pizza place (though she didn’t eat, b/c she had just come from eating with friends. Pizza, in fact). Then we walked up and down Freedom Avenue, the main street in Kaunas, for about an hour, and then she drove me home.
I don’t mean to be painting such a bleak picture of the evening, because it was a fine evening. Monika was very nice once we got through that first car ride, and we had things to talk about 75% of the time. But it was awkward—and I just kept thinking ‘what was Birute (my host mother) thinking?’
Like any experience, all ‘firsts’ have the potential to be incredibly good or incredibly bad, or atleast incredibly mediocre. I put this one in the incredibly mediocre category. I think that the next time I agree to a blind date it will be in a country where I speak the language, so that I can at least have some sort of input as to the terms of the engagement.

you should have an application made up
You need to sit dwn and make a detailed application for dating, and give it you your host mother. Tell her that if she is going to pimp you out than she need to have a standerd application process that girls must go through before they can be graced with your time. We miss you don't fall in love, and if you do make sure she is ok with comming back to the US MUCH LOVE Stay Black
