Sarah
She is cute, onrey, talks Vietnamese and English and dominates everywhere she goes. She comes home from school and completely wears me out in an hour or two. The first person to greet me at the airport was Trang, my former Rotary Exchange Student. The second was Huan, her husband who borrowed a car from a friend to pick me up at the airport. The third person to greet me was Sarah, their three-year-old daughter. When she saw me, she grasps each elbow in front of her and bowed saying: "Chau ong" (Hello Grandpa.), Then in perfect English: "Follow me." It seems little Sarah is somewhat bilingual.
I was here three years ago when she was born. Her parents made it clear they were the smartest parents alive and had an answer for everything. What they didn't know, six thousand years of Vietnamese culture would help. For instance, the first nine weeks of her life little Sarah was bathed in Tea. A Vietnamese tradition that would ease the trama of birth and help her immune system.
Sarah is a star in her parent's eyes and her own. At four and a half, months old she was hired by an advertising agency to make a commercial about milk. She was treated like a celebraty and everyday for the shoot, a taxi would be sent to pick up little Sarah
and her Mother. It is on national TV. She made enough money to buy her own baby bed.
I would classify her as a type A personality. Believe me, she always gets her way. Not just 99 percent of the time but a hundred percent. She dominates wherever she goes.
She loves electronic things and gives a workout to my camera everyday. Wherever I hide it, she finds it and goes through all the gizmos on it. On off, On off, flips through all the photos on it. It is a testament to the Sony Corporation that my camera still works. She also works on my computer and all the other electronic gizmos, I bring to Vietnam.
When Sarah was two, I accompanied Trang and Sarah to Sarah's first visit to a department(superstore) in Vietnam. She went wild and terrified the whole place. She caused one clerk to spill her coffee, pulled clothes of the tables, hid in the clothes rakes. While I was just trying to contain her on one floor, her Mother was calmly paying little attention and shopping. Even Trang, the smartest Mother in the world occasionally says: "Sarah is driving me crazy."
Sarah
Her American nickname is Sarah
Her Vietnamese nickname is chip.
Her real name is: Trần Nguyễn Giâ Hân One of the best things I have done with Sarah was talk her parents in taking her to a beautiful park nearby. As I predicted, the park was too big for Sarah to conquer. She ran out of gas and was soon asking to go home and take a nap. We all got some peace.
I hope I live long enough to see how Sarah turns out. However that is, it won't be for lack of love. We all love her.
