After a 16 hour flight I arrived in Santiago yesterday at 1pm local time and took a shared van from the airport into the city. I checked into La Chimba Hostel in Barrio Bellavista (and wandered around for an hour trying to find a phone to call Mum and Dad) then I explored the city and despite the layer of fog hiding the Andes, it is amazing.
I walked from Barrio Bellavista to Central Santiago through Parque Forestal, with a detour through Mercado Central, which I discovered is a fresh seafood market. In the centre are restaurants and as you walk by waiters try and get you to sit down. When they heard my accent they asked lots of questions about Australia and what I thought of Chile, so instead of taking a few minutes to walk through it took twenty.
I then went to the city centre. It was interesting to see the mixture of historic buildings and new skyscrapers.
I thought it would be me who would be making mistakes with money and paying too much but somehow at the end of the day I realised I had 5000 pesos more than I should have which was a bonus.
The temperature was starting to drop so I went back to the hostel. Barro Bellavista is a great neigbourhood and on a Friday night all the clubs and discotheques were very loud and very full, but because I was catching a flight the next day I decided not to stay out too long.
Now it is saturday morning and everyone is gathered around the television watching the football. World Cup time is the perfect time to be here!

Wow!! Sounds like you're having an amazing time. I have butterflies cos I'm so excited for you!!! I'm so proud that you picked the "practical" shoes - it must have been a hard choice. Very inspirational. You certainly live up to your title of 'Patron Saint of Bags and Shoes'. Looking forward to reading more about your travels. Have fun!!! Ang xx
