crown of gold
this lovely piece was in the Art Gallery - the blue is feathers sorry I forgot the name of the bird that they come from but wow what a colour! Wednesday morning up and into what I am sure is going to be our routine. Terry has gone for his early morning walk – I don’t even hear him leave and that is his me time. For me it’s on the computer and catching up with my blog. It was a huge day yesterday which started out with an easy hop across the road to the Art Gallery. Its housed in a very modern building which has awesome views over the River to Hong Kong. We saw a couple of exhibitions the one was called Apprentice to Master. Here they had paintings by both Western and Chinese artists of the same theme but their own depictions. Chinese paintings were sought after in the 18
th and 19
thCenturies and the Chinese artists copied the Western style. So even back then the Chinese saw a good opportunity of what to sell to the west and they have not lost their touch!
There was also an exhibition of pottery which I adore and one or two pieces of jewelry. After wandering around here for a couple of hours we headed to the ferry and crossed over to Hong Kong – all very
toilet doors
the Gallery must have the prettiest toilet doors (and cleanest) toilets in the world. it was such a delight. easy. It was then a hop on the number 15 bus and a wonderful ride to the Peak. Quite scary in places as the road is very narrow and it’s bloody high. The views are awesome but the day was grey – certainly not cold. We had some wonton and noodles for lunch and I was surprised as they were cheap – not a rip off like one would expect in an area where they could call the shots for a captive audience. There were restaurants that were very upmarket spread around so you could choose. I loved the roof terrace of the lookout. They used a solar system for the water pumps, that had a rain sensor on so would not water if it was going to rain. The garden was actually the roof so it helps keep the building underneath cooler and the water that came off a glass roof area was collected to use for watering. We walked about and its funny you just walk a little further along the path and you loose the crowds. Lovely lush jungle type of vegetation. On the way down we took the tram. With hindsight I would do it the
Ferry
from Kowloon to Hong Kong other way round as the seats only face towards the front so you are going down the hill with your back facing. I managed to turn around in my seat as I had an aisle – its hectic perhaps that’s why they don’t want you facing. I have done my Disney ride for the holiday thanks!! We walked through the gardens when we got off and spent some time with the birds in an a huge free flying aviary that reminded us of Singapore. There was a Tea Museum there which we had a look around as well. We caught a tram till we saw a market and got off and wandered around. You buy live fish here. The crabs were trying to crawl out the containers everything looks like it has just been picked nothing dead in packets. You only buy what you need for the meal you are making. It’s the one thing Asia really has sorted! Not like us who buy too much that lies in our fridges to go bad. I suppose its also easier to purchase on your way home everything happens on the street and you don’t have to go inside supermarkets and
Roof garden
solar, water collection and roof garden and I love all the recycling in this city queue for hours either! We were offered to eat in a restaurant that sold snake and terrapin soup – no thanks but settled for a delicious cup of tea and shared a cake that looked like a scone but was light like a cake with butter and candy floss like pineapple yummy!!!! This tiny little café was so busy and that’s all that it sold tea’s and little cakes. Men in smart suits after work were there along with the riff raff like us.
Hong Kong is funny as all we seemed to do after getting off that tram was to walk down via millions and gazillions of escalators. I don’t think I have ever seen so many escalators in one place in my life in fact I don’t think I have ever seen so many escalators in my life! You are also dwarfed by all these tall buildings a small old high rise is over 20 stories (about a 5th of the new buildings) and they look quite insignificant next to the new sky scrapers. The Bank of China which is the 4
th tallest building in Hong Kong is 315 metres high and you won’t catch
me alive going to the top of that one!!!
We bought some take aways for dinner- yes at last some duck for me sushi for Terry and we came home to our hotel room to eat it. Tired and exhausted from this long busy day out. Tomorrow we are going to Disneyworld.
