We had breaky and used wifi in the morning. It was a toss-up whether we spent the day at Long Beach, or chartered a long tail boat for the day to check out the surroundings. We ran into the guys from Vietnam that bought our motorbikes and they said they paid 500 baht for 4 hours. We knew we were never going to be able to get that price, but decided we’d pay up to 900 baht. We made up our mind that we’d head towards Long Beach and we’d ask the taxi drivers along the way. If we found one that would do it for the price we wanted we’d go, but if we made it to Long Beach then we’d beach it for the day. We found a guy that would do it for 900 for 4 hours so off we went. The surrounding area is beautiful with its limestone cliffs, turquoise waters and white sand. First stop was snorkeling. Our boat driver would throw bread in, and we’ve never seen so many fish at once. We were surrounded in every direction by yellow and blue fish, rainbow colored fish, needle nose fish, angel fish etc. On the ocean floor we could see different coral and plants, some with bright blue hues. Our second stop was Maya Bay. He told us if he went to the front of the island we’d have to pay a 200 baht park fee, but if we went in the back way it’s free: of course we opted for the back way. He wouldn’t pull his boat close so the three of us had to swim towards the rope ladder to pull ourselves up. Maya Bay is stunning. Enclosed in a limestone cliff bay, the water is calm enough for swimming, the sand is soft, white and the perfect temperature, there wasn’t a ton of people, and the grounds beyond were kept raked and tidy. We don’t think we would’ve had to pay 200 baht each as we didn’t see anyone collecting money… we think the driver didn’t want to waste gas and drive around the island. At Maya bay we all went for a quick swim, then headed back to find our boat. After standing there trying to spot him he waved and motioned for us to swim out. Mom nor I felt confident that we’d make it, so Tris being the brave one swam out and made him come closer for us. Our third stop was for more snorkeling. I was too tired to go back in after the swim, but Tris went out. He said because the water was deeper that the fish were a lot larger. Meanwhile, our boat driver puts bread in the water and sphered in as many fish as he could. He said he sells them to the locals. On our way towards monkey beach we stopped at a crab trap. We weren’t sure if it was his, but there was one crab in it and he kept it. At monkey beach there were some other people feeding the monkeys bananas. Once they had the bananas they ran off deep into the trees. We spent some time exploring and taking pictures before heading back to Phi Phi island. After showering we had a fantastic dinner at a local food stall. I knew that Dad and I had walked past the pier and there had been food stalls, but I thought that the area would be a big resort by now. To our surprise we found a great little place that cooked up really good authentic Thai food.
Tomorrow it’s off to Koh Lanta.
