We arrived in Venice at about 5:30 pm via the high-speed train from Rome. After the air-conditioned comfort of the train, we were met with a blast of muggy air as we exited Venice’s Santa Lucia train station.

It was so hot! The air was thick with humidity, and the train station was crowded with throngs of people. We waited in a long line to buy our 3-day passes for the “water bus” (vaporetto) and finally boarded the vaporetto about an hour after arriving in Venice.

The vaporetto, too, was crowded with both tourists and residents. We lugged our suitcases to the center and watched the beautiful buildings of Venice as we made our way to the Grand Canal. Our stop was San Silvestro, about 25 minutes from the train station.

After getting off the vaporetto, we proceeded down the narrow alley that lead towards our B&B, the Ca D’Angeli. It’s never a straight path to any place in Venice, and we had to turn through various campos and little streets as we found our way to the hotel.

Ca D’Angeli is beautiful. It’s very near the water, and it’s in a restored old building on three

levels (thankfully, there’s an elevator). Our hosts are wonderful, and our room is spacious and clean, with a very large closet where we are storing all our luggage.

After we took a quick shower, we went out to explore a bit of Venice at night. It was still light when we left the hotel -- it gets dark here quite late compared to Hawaii. We walked to the Piazza San Marco. Along the way, we stopped for pizza tagliata (pizza sold by the slice) and ate it picnic style along the grand Canal.

Piazza San Marco was as beautiful as I remembered, dominated by the beautiful church. However, the girls were a bit disappointed in Venice because they had gotten familiar with Rome and now had to learn about all the “hot spots” for youth. Piazza San Marco is more for tourists and romantic couples than for teenagers!

We got home at around 10:30 pm and went to bed almost right away...we were tired after the long day and heat.
