The hills are alive with the sound of music…., Ok, I’ll quit singing.
Everyone is up Mandy, Brian and the Kids have reservations to take the Sound of Music tour. Been there, done that. So Kirsten and I along with Oma and Opa are off to see a castle that was built by King Ludwig II. This is the guy that built Neuschwanstein, the Cinderella castle you see at Disney. I know you that Mickey Mouse created that. Sorry the Germanys did it first.
Ok, back to our travels. King Ludwig II also known as Crazy King Ludwig built another castle on the island of Hereninsel located in the Chiemsee. Remember yesterday’s discussion on lakes, they call them “Seas” over here. So there is this lake that has two islands one is called Herreninsel (Boy Island) and the other is call Fraueninsel (Girl Island). Monks have monastery thus explains the Men’s island. Guess who lives on the girl island, you guessed it, nuns. So this is where we’re going today.
The story begins with Crazy king Ludwig goes and visits Versailles and comes back thinking I need a place like that and orders it built just like the
one in France. I mean just like the one in France. You thought only the Chinese knew how to copy other peoples stuff; King Ludwig could teach them a few things.
So we drive to the Chiemsee and buy our tickets to ride over to Herreninsel first. The boat docks and I’m expecting to see the castle, but I don’t. The boat captain point to the sign and it’s a 30 minute hike that way. Well Kirsten knows that Opa can’t walk that far so she gets two tickets to ride this cool wagon to the castle. After getting Oma and Opa on the wagon we go skipping down the path holding hands. Ok, maybe not skipping but we were holding hands. I’m thinking as I walk past the monastery, by the way which is a brewery, this castle better be worth the hike or I’m getting my money back. As we walk through this nicely managed forest we turn the corner and there it is. I’m standing there in total amazement; I think I’m in France. This is such a beautiful castle, as were walking up to the castle the gardens are just like they are in Versailles.
Words can’t begin to tell you how nice it is. We walk up to the palace and about that time Oma and Opa arrive, we have about 45 minutes before our tour so we find a nice spot and have Kirsten’s famous brachen sandwiches for lunch. Our tour began at 12:15 and lasted about 45 minutes. The interior of the castle was totally French. The paintings and everything, nothing German. If you didn’t know better you would think you were in France. One last note, Crazy King Ludwig only spent 10 days at this castle. So we wrap up the tour and were off to Fraueninsel, we go back to our boat and ride over. Very uneventful, this island is small and the abbey is still operational. We walk around and see their Chapel and it’s very nice. No castle here, but Opa found a nice café.
It’s about 4 PM and we decide to head back to the house, Oma ask if we could stop for cake and coffee and we all agree. So we find a nice café on our way home and have a nice relaxing snack.
We get home and Kirsten prepares a great
German meal of Broths and potatoes. About the time the table is set mandy, Brian and the kids come rolling in. Over dinner they tell us about their day doing the Sound of Music tour. Marks favorite part was eating at McDonalds. Watch the movie it’s better on TV.
We wound down our evening playing card and laughing.
Tomorrow will come fast, we hope everyone is doing well.
