Our day began with a jam packed car – eight people to be precise. We headed to Hat Yai, dropping off three people on the way. After an hour long journey we arrived at one of the biggest shopping centres in Hat Yai called ‘Big C’, where we had a typical lunch (for us, not for Thailand) of pasta… yes it feels like the healthy eating has been ruined, to add to that we’re currently eating a bowl of deformed aero bubbles. At the shopping centre, Hollie bought some oreos for one of her friends, but coming home to a suitcase full of ants, we decided to eat the oreos and buy more substantial presents later on in our holiday!

When we had been round the Carrefour in Hat Yai, Jess purchasing some flip flops as the double strapped gladiator sandles are not really practical for a country where you flip them off every time you enter a home, and certain buildings, we met up with our Russian friend Murad who we met at Bangkok airport, and his sister Lima. We first mistook Lima for a Thai… because she looks really asian, and he agreed with us and said everyone from their Russian town looks asian because they are near the Siberian side of Russia.

When we met him they couldn’t believe that we would be able to fit them plus us 5 into the car (paeng, rob, clara and us) but we told them we’d just had 8 people, so they eventually crammed in with us! We went to some ‘touristy’ floating markets, we saw various delights such as fried insects, fighting fish, and various works of art and craft. We couldn’t believe that amongst the thai delicacies there was a floating boat selling “KFC”… which Murad favoured as opposed to the local cuisine, though he did try some squid later, and forced it on us too!

After dropping Murad and Lima back near the university where they are staying (like Murad Lima is also an undergrad med student) we headed back, playing a game of ‘eye spy’ with Clara or ‘I spy with by beeble bye” as she calls it. As we arrived home Hollie uncovered some swollen bites on her legs, which seemed to have gotten a lot worse, we later discovered the culprits were some ants that had made their way into her suitcase due to her shortbread- even though it hadn’t even been opened yet! Luckily we’ve now cleared out her suitcase and can hopefully steer clear of those type of bites for the rest of our trip.

Staying local tomorrow, and hopefully heading to Songkhla beach and possibly an island the next day. Hope you like the photos- of the floating markets, temple we visited yesterday, and JJ and Rob on the rubber plantation from Saturday, we can only upload photos when we are at an internet cafe, hense the images being uploaded now from previous days.

Lots of love,

Hollie and Jess
