Arrived in Cafayate after another picturesque journey through the mountains - only issue for me was that Gordon had calculated it would take 2.5 hours (it took 5.5 hours) and we had no food for the journey!
Cafayate is quite a small town surrounded by mountains. Our hostel was refreshingly clean after the last two and we had a nice double bedroom, with shared bathroom (but nobody else in the bit that we would have shared with so in effect to ourselves).
The town had a really nice feel about it and we both instantly liked it and reserved another night at the hostel.
The next morning we took a tour (basically, a man in a car and an Arsenal top took us for a 45 minute drive!) to Quilmers. Here there are ruins of a city which was abandoned in 1810. Bit like a Machu Picchu although not so high up! We had 1.5 hours to wander round the ruins and the huge cactii before getting back in the car to go back to the hostel.
The weather (considering this is Winter) has been amazing so we've sat about on the lovely terrace of the hostel
with beer (for G) and empanadas (for me!). This is the life!
We heard about a local heladaria (ice cream shop) that does wine ice-cream so we had to try it out! Needless to say G decided he preferred his wine in a glass but I quite liked it! (I had white, G had red!)
We have been able to cook ok in the hostel - even tried out some fish for a change that we bought from the market (although oven doesn't work!). There are only a few other guests and the staff are lovely.
Yesterday we did a walk that gave us a view of the town then did a couple of bodegas (wineries) where you get a tour and a sample of their produce (one was even free!) even got some very nice local goats cheese to have with the wine (at the free one!). Also more empanadas and beer on the terrace in the sun!
Moving further North as we aim for Bolivia.
