Church dome and bouganvillea, Positano
Worth the climb for a view like this one Brilliant sunshine greeted us as we woke up in Sorrento. The campsite at Nube D'Argento was lovely - bouganvillea everywhere and a fantastic pool and restaurant which we had taken advantage of when we arrived very late. The pizza was wonderful, and the cafe terrace looked over the pool and on to the sea.
It was great to meet up with the Mathews family, who had travelled a little before us to Rome, and who had been spending some lazy days by the pool waiting for us to arrive. Steve had sussed out a boat trip to Positano which took our fancy, so after a quick breakfast we set off down to the bay in Sorrento. We wound our way through little lanes that later in the day became packed with shoppers. I was fascinated by all the produce - for example, we saw these flat peaches that looked like someone had sat on them, but smelled delicious, and huge bags of porcini mushrooms for tiny prices, and all sorts of cured meats. We were on a mission though. To get to the jetty, we had to take hundreds of stairs down from the main street and walk down a
road bordered by stone walls at least 3 storeys high.
The boat trip was a great plan. We all chose a deck chair and breathed a big contented sigh as we pulled out of Sorrento harbour with "Volare" playing over the loudspeaker. I think the best way to see this part of the world is from the water - you get a completely different perspective. All the fancy hotels are perched on the edge of cliffs, and the vertigo when you stand there and look down to the water is really something! I preferred the view from the boat.
As we approached Capri (Say "Caaapri"!), the captain slowed near the White Grotto for us to swim. Everyone jumped off the side of the boat, and we couldn't believe how clear and deep and jade green the water was. Afterwards there were big outdoor showers on the deck to save us from salt itch in Positano, and they were almost as much fun as the swim!
There was low cloud over Positano as we approached, which made it seem quite mystical. The pastel houses and hotels went up the cliffs for miles. We waited for a little fishing
boat to take off from the dock before walking down the gangplank on our way to lunch. Trip Advisor is proving very helpful. We liked the look of a restaurant which was quite empty in comparison with many others, but had a wonderful view and crisp white tablecloths. After consulting Trip Advisor on the i-pad we gave it a try and had a wonderful meal of seafood pasta and risotto. Hugo was very pleased to see pizza on the menu again! Unfortunately there was no room left for the beautiful cakes we spied half-way up the Positano hill, but I was satisfied with a photo.
It was lovely to relax on the beach after our busy first few days, (boy is that black sand hot!) and everyone got on the boat back to Sorrento very contented. Once home, no-one was ready for bed, and the sun was still high in the sky so we decided on an evening swim and a gelato. I'm not really an ice-cream person, but the gelato really is out of this world. As peaches are in season the peach gelato is amazing. Sorrento is really beautiful in the evening, and we enjoyed the golden
glow as we walked home to bed. Tomorrow we're off to Tuscany!
