Tales from the Cyber Abyss ...

Well it has been some time since we last shared tales from our travels - largely due to the fact that we returned to Melbourne, and weren't really travelling any more (weekends away, camping trips and honeymooning don't really cut it like months on the road does!). However, now we're merely days away from our next proper travel adventure so have decided it might be time to resurrect the blog to share the times ahead, and this time attempt to keep it up-to-date! As well as being our primary method of home-base communication, our blog self-indulgently serves as a reminder of where we went, what we saw and who we met along the way. It's amazing how flicking back through past blogs has the power to transport us back in time, and relive our past memories (especially for me who has the memory span of a goldfish!), and reignite our passion to see more!

So although we've been lost in the cyber abyss we certainly haven't become complacent!

Six months ago we got married! We got engaged whilst travelling in Ireland in 2008, and procrastinated for some time about where and when to say our "I dos". Sorrento on Melbourne's magical Mornington Peninsula proved the perfect place to honour our dream of a beachside wedding surrounded by friends and family. We were blessed with perfect weather, and were thrilled to be surrounded by our family and friends, many of whom made a mammoth effort to travel from the UK, Ireland, NZ, and all across Australia to share in our special day. We love you guys!!

We honeymooned in Bali and I fear that I have now been ruined as a budget backpacker for life. I suspect that the result of this is that during this trip we might have a few more "treats" along the way, and I will refrain from haggling over the last 10 cents with tuk-tuk drivers. Our Bali-moon comprised of our own private fully-self contained villa suite, replete with private pool, indoor and outdoor bathrooms, jacuzzi, garden and butler. No need to leave the confines of our villa ... so for a couple of days we lounged by our pool thoroughly enjoying our swanky start to married life.

This experience was worlds apart from our normal travel regime, and after 5 days of pampering we headed out to the Gili Islands off the coast of Lombok, which was more akin to travel Dave and Suz style. The Gilis are accessible only by boat, and are completely free of cars and motorised transport, with the only mode of transport being pedal-power or taking a "clip clop" on a cidomo (horse drawn carriages). We spent 10 days chillin' out here, diving, eating, snorkelling, and relaxing before heading back to Ubud in Bali. I had grander hopes for Ubud, but I suppose after the luxury of Seminyak and the quiet serenity of the Islands, Ubud seemed a bit dirty and crowded.

The two and half years since we last arrived home have really flown by! Aside from the normal working caper, we’ve kept ourselves busy. We took a trip back to NZ so Dave could experience the motherland, ventured north to Byron Bay and Port Douglas, had a few trips to Sydney, and headed south to Tasmania. The rest of the time has been spent catching up with friends here and interstate, camping adventures, celebrating a few weddings, and welcoming many new babies into the world.

We’ve included a few of our favourite photos from some of our experiences we’ve had since being home, as a reminder of all the good times, and all the reasons to return home!
