***Sorry been soooo busy sunning, snorkelling and travelling. I am a few days behind but will try and get up to date soon. Don't forget no pressure and on holidays, if you know what we mean!!!
Day 33 - Friday 5 May 2006
Kalbarri
Graeme and Duane went fishing this morning. Duane caught a silver bream. We went out in the tinny this afternoon over to the island but the weather turned windy and it was quite rocky in the tinny. We visited the island across the river where the pelicans have learnt to ring a big bell for return trips for people that have been dropped off at the hire boat company to come and collect them.
Day 34 - Saturday 6 May 2006
Kalbarri to Monkey Mia
We were very excited this morning as we were going to see the dolphins. We popped in to Shell Beach where the whole beach is covered in small shells. It feels funny underfoot. The water is so blue and clear. The kids jumped in the water with only their undies/boxers on. They didn’t care. We weren’t sure we were we were going to stay so we arrived at Denham which
Monkey Mia 1
The dolphins is approximately 25 km’s away from Monkey Mia. We went into the visitor centre to see what accommodation was available and was told that the best place to stay for our requirements was Monkey Mia as we could put the tinny in and it is very protected waters for swimming and snorkelling. The visitor centre rang through to the Monkey Mia resort and was told that there was no powered sites. I was very disappointed and I didn’t believe the visitor centre so we decided to drive up there with the caravan on and see if they could squeeze us in. We took the kids in with us so they would feel sorry for us. They said at reception there were no sites only unpowered available until the following day so we were prepared to do this when the man that was serving the other side of the reception desk said there was a powered site available. So we grabbed it and Graeme got so excited we booked in for 3 nights straight away not caring how much it would cost as long as we could stay. It is a nice resort atmosphere which accommodates for caravanners, backpackers and motel
rooms. We had dinner at the Monkey Bar which serves cheap meals for under $10. Very nice.
Day 35 - Sunday 7 May 2006
Monkey Mia
The weather is beautiful over 25 and not a cloud in the sky. The sea breeze is wonderful. We saw the dolphins this morning. A little bit commercialized but well worth it. We saw about 8 dolphins and I got chosen to feed one but passed it on to Duane. Look at the photos. You are not allowed to touch them but they come in very shallow so you can see them really up and close. We put the tinny in this afternoon and all went snorkelling. We jumped in (very fresh in the water) and snorkeled around. Very clear in the water and lots of little fish and coral everywhere. I then saw a jellyfish and started to get frightened for the family. Before I knew it everybody else was in the tinny and I was the only stupid one in the water. It was quite funny as I couldn’t get back in the tinny. Legs and arms were flying everywhere. Still not sure whether it was poisonous.
Day 36 -
Monday 8 May 2006
Monkey Mia
The people are beautiful around here and some live here six months of the year. They go out fishing everyday and it is amazing what size fish they pull in. The biggest fish we saw was a bluebone that was about 7 kgs. The fish was green but have blue bones in them and blue teeth. Apparently the taste is between chicken and whiting. Graeme has quite lots of fish but nothing substantial to bring back and cook. Anyway Graeme doesn’t like eating fish anyway. We spent the day out in the tinny and on the beach. Kiera caught her first fish. The pelicans are so friendly. You can feed them fish and they stand about 50 cm’s away from you. The sunsets are very nice too. The man across the road helped Graeme finally set up this satellite TV. He has been having trouble getting it but wow what a picture now. It is so clear. This place is our pick so far. We didn’t want to leave but we don’t know what is ahead yet.
Day 37 - Tuesday 9 May 2006
Monkey Mia to Carnarvon
Everybody tells us that this
is the place to pick up supplies especially fruit and vegetables. Graeme wanted to get the car serviced as we have travelled approximately 9000 km’s. We couldn’t get into the local Nissan dealer so we booked into the local Toy Dealer. Otherwise we would have had to wait until Port Hedland for a service and that is another 2000 km’s approximately. We picked up our groceries from a normal size supermarket for us but huge for them.
Day 38 - Wednesday 10 May 206
Carnarvon
We didn’t have our 4WD today as it was in for a service so we hung around the caravan. This afternoon we drove down to the local jetty that is 1 mile long and has a train that runs along it. It wasn’t running today so the kids were disappointed. We drove around the plantations (mainly bananas) and bought local produce from their shops. The bananas were only $2.00 per bag of 6. We bought up so our fruit bowl is sky high and it is so cheap. Everybody keeps telling us to stock up as you will be stung the further we go up North. Tomorrow we are heading to Coral Bay.
