We enjoyed seeing the Middle East. Dubai is known for it's " The world's MOSTS, FIRSTS and BIGGEST."
When we stepped out of the airport we could not believe the heat! We were convinced we were standing under some hot engine of some sort but then soon realised this is just the cool evening temperature!
We found that there were mainly Philipinos walking around and make up most of the workforce.
Shopping Malls are a whole different story, men in polarized sunglasses clutching the latest mobile phone and in full length white jubbas (white long coat) and slender black figures in full lenth jilbabs (long black dress) seem to float effortlesly up and down the high gloss marble isles. These ladies spare no expense when it comes to shoes which peak out from underneath their jilbabs, handbags and makeup, as these are the parts that allow them to sparkle their personality. Their flawless makeup is sometimes hidden by oversized polarized sunglasses or batoolas (face mask decorated with gold or other materials). I was told by a Qatari resident that these ladies can sometimes spend up to $10 000 U.S a month on their make up! WOW!!! Prada, Gucci and the
like flash everywhere!
Enough shopping, we also had to do some work while there! Water is more expensive than petrol and many say if only they could drink oil they would be better off! Petrol is so cheap that when the locals go shopping- they leave their huge suv's (mostly Land Cruisers) parked in the basement parkings with the engine running so that the car will be cool and air conditioned when they return 3 or 4 hours later! Obviously no one dares stealing it and it is very safe! So, back to work.. now that means that business owners love showing off with water features and spare no expense when it comes to luxurious and extravagant water features ..that's where we come in..(chlorine free water purification systems).. It was really challenging climbing down a steep ladder into the underground pumproom in the middle of a dusty construction site, but eventually I got the hang of it..
In Qatar and Dubai we saw construction cranes for Africa! There were buildings goung up everywhere! They estimated at that time (2007) that about 30 % of the world's cranes were in Dubai, that's a crazy amount of building for one
place! Watching Burj Khalifa going up was amazing. It is now the WORLD'S TALLEST tower at over 160 stories high and almost 900m! Dubai also has a ski slope in the Mall of Emirates, snow covers about 22,500sqm (about 3 football fields),it's about 25 stories high and 80m wide! We weren't really dressed for the occasion so we gave it a miss!
Other than that, Dubai is all about money and spending...not much else to do..so, if you have a good stash of money then you can enjoy a longer stay and explore the sand dune safaris and pampering spas and so on.. our time here is done.. x
