Today in Shanghai. Started the day with a lovely buffet breakfast on the 18th floor with views over the river. Sent Barrie to get the coffee and he came back with tea and soy milk! Got it wrong on both counts.

Strolled down the street to Nanjing Road mall; one of the busiest shopping malls in Shanghai. Bought a jumper and a pair of boots to stave off the colder weather that we will encounter further north.

The sun was shining all day and being in shops most of the time didn't feel too cold. Went searching for some Chanel headbands and scarves and ended up following this local down side streets and over bridges to some market. Passed all sorts of shops sellling everything from shoes, electrical components, food, ball bearings - practically anything you can imagine. I felt very incongruous as it seemed that we were the only westerners around. When we finally got to the market, we were hassled left right and centre! And to make it worse there was nothing that I wanted to buy. Mention Chanel and they immediately think "handbags".

Had a lovely lunch in a local restaurant; Barrie was game and ordered prawn and noodles, but I stuck with a sandwich.

Poor Barrie; his foot is so swollen, but he refuses to seek medical attention or even let me strap it. I fear that he may have broken a little bone somewhere.

After walking the streets of Shanghai, I must say I am quite impressed with this metropolis (largest city in China). While there are people and motorbikes everywhere you look, the streets are very clean with little Chinese people sweeping the gutters with a broom fashioned from a piece of bamboo and a bunch of twigs!

My next blog will be from on board Azamara Quest - hopefully tomorrow.

This 2 hectare garden was built by one of the city's administrators 450 years ago to house his aged parents. All the buildings and some of the original furnishings still exist.
