After the delight that was the Perhentians we finally had to move on due to the fact we were fast running out of ringits. However, with Southern Thailand next on the itinerary this didn't seem such a bad thing. We took a ferry and two buses to get to the border. The lack of security was amazing. We walked up to the customs officer on the Malay side and got our passports stamped out. After that it was a quick walk across the bridge into Thailand. We nearly didn't get our passports stamped into the country because the building was on the other side of the road. We thought it was just for people leaving! Luckily some local guy pointed us in the right direction and we were able to enter the country legally. After that it was just a pleasant nine hour train ride to Surat Thani. Yes, that's right another nine hours on public transport. It was hot and stinky most of the way. I realise that I am getting better at coping with these trips, however I ALWAYS look forward to getting off.

We got herded off the train to some guesthouse and then herded onto a bus and ferry the next morning to Koh Samui. My first impressions were disappointment after the wonder that was the Perhentians. The place we were staying was pretty much full of old German men wearing speedos and Thai girls. There more than enough beer bellies on dislay!

We only stayed in Koh Samui for a couple of days and during that time we did nothing!! So after that it was on to Koh Pangan. We had been given directions by a friend (thanks Ron) to Haad Yuan which is a little beach not far from the main drag of Haad Rin. We hoped off the taxi boat and walked up the beach to find our friend Lori hanging out there. She had been there for three months and we hadn't even known. Needless to say there were a few beers drunk over the next couple of days. I must be getting old though as it was nothing like what I used to do. We even went into Haad Rin on Friday night. There were plenty of young drunk people everywhere making arses of themselves. Very fun to watch. Apparently the girls thought the ocean became a toilet at night. I saw more than one hoisting her skirt in the sea. I kept hoping one of them would fall in, but alas it was not to be.

On the Saturday a university tour group arrived from Canada so the frat party continued. It was about this time we figured we should get out of there. We had spent about three weeks on a beach so it was time to see some sights again. Bangkok here we come! - Fi

This dog and sandal were very far away from anywhere you might find a sandal and leaving at great speed. It's a little blurry but you get the idea.

Scenic Toilet

Well really a scenic toilet route. The actual toilet has roots from a tree growing over it penetrating the roof with hoards of spiders living among them. So it's not what I would call scenic.
