Phnom Penh is not what I expected. After reading the recent history of Cambodia and hearing how poor Cambodia is, I expected a city struggling to cope. I expected to hassled by beggars on the street like in India. But it is amazingly vibrant and energetic city. It seems they are trying to make up for lost time. It is only 12 years since the end of the Khymer Rouge and the civil wars and apparently it has really taken off in the last 6 years. There are new buildings going up rapidly, stylish shops and restaurants, lots of big 4WDs. The water and the streets are now clean, the electricity reliable and mobile phones and good internet are available everywhere. Much of the infrastrucuture is due to international aid but a lot of building development due to cronyism and corruption.

Hi Laurie, yes I was very surprised too. Air clean, couldn't believe how many Lexus around. Interesting comments about corruption- huge developments around Seim Reap & impact on local people as a result of this.
