Hello again,
Soccer tryouts went very well even though I played without gloves, shin guards, and pants. My legs are still paying the price from the tryouts. I find out tomorrow whether I become a John Cabot Gladiator, or not. On Friday, we went on a scavenger hunt that took us all across the city. Through the tasks, we actually learned a lot about the transportation system and I think I am finally getting a feel as where things are. As my dad would say, I have developed an inner gyroscope. On the hunt, we saw the changing of the guard for the president of Rome and stuck our hands in the mouth of truth. That night we went to ice bar, which is was a must on my list. This bar is completely made of ice and is awesome. We showed up a little late but we had the place to ourselves. It was -5 degrees Celsius, so I was a little cold but I definitely plan on returning. Lack of sleep and possibly ice bar contributed to me feeling pretty ill so it limited my Friday night. On Saturday, we went to mandatory self defense training. It was led by some really fun Italians and we actually learned some useful tips. Unfortunately, JCU students have been running into some problems with the locals and I will even admit, I fell victim to an attempted pick pocket. Luckily, thanks to the countless hours of training from Bill Nally, they were unsuccessful and vanished into the night. It was still a scary situation. Saturday night was one of my first real experiences into a local bar. A friend of mine bought me a shot and after further investigation after taking it, I discovered not only was it Absinthe, but it was also 160 proofs. Needless to say that was the last thing I drank last night. Obviously, I am having a blast and meshing well with the roommates. We have started a thing called Kangaroo Kourt, which allows the roommates to credit or fine each other for behavior. For example, puking would be fined one euro but saving someone from a bad situation would be credited a Euro. It really allows for issues to be aired out and the money will be used to fund a night out.
