After the success of a year travelling around Australia in 2004/2005, I made a big decision a couple of months ago to go on a big trip around the world.

After several drafts of routes I could take, lists of places I would love to visit and lots of weighing up of options, as there is limited funds and only four months, I opted for a beaten track backpacker approach.

The chosen route will start in Hong Kong tomorrow, the 5th of January, before heading to Hanoi in Vietnam. From there I plan to head south along the Vietnamese coast to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), then across the border to Cambodia before going to Thailand. From there I'll continue to overland through Thailand to Malaysia and on to Singapore. Then fly from Singapore for a stop in Bali before going to Perth, Australia. The intention is to overland to Sydney then to fly to Hawaii en-route to San Francisco with the last overland section being across the USA to New York.

I've always wondered what the Americans really think of our royal family, so I should either be in New York or along the east coast in time for the royal wedding at the end of April. I will find out :-) There is a lot of ground to cover in such a short space of time so I will have to try to keep to a good pace that allows me to get through the places but also lets me see them...
