Blog #18 – The Catlins– Dec. 9th , 2010
On December 9 we set off for Bluff where we would catch the ferry to Stewart Island. Our route took us through a beautiful area called the Catlins. The flowers were incredible – the yellows of gorse and other flowers, purple hydrangeas, a lovely blue flower we saw for the first time here – and all against a backdrop of surf and spray. We enjoyed a lengthy stop at Nugget Point. As we walked along a cliff out to the lighthouse, we could look down and see the seals swimming below us. There were also remarkable patterns in the water created by different currents meeting off the point of land. We stopped at a weird and wonderful place called the Lost Gypsy Gallery and saw some amazing creations made from found objects or recycled materials. We particularly studied the stone paths! And of course, no trip would be complete without a glimspe of some waterfalls – these were the Purakaunui Falls.

The blue flower in pic 6
photo 6 is the NZ native solanum; S. laciniatum.. commonly called poroporo. yes it's pretty but often pulled out as a weed in gardens. Lovely description and pics - I will link to Fb group The Catlins New Zealand - if that is OK with you!
