Queenstown to lake Tekapo

Day 27 Monday

Left Queenstown today and headed north. It feels strange because we are on the last leg of our journey heading to Christchurch with an overnight stop at Lake Tekapo. We took our time cos there were places we wanted to stop on the way.

First stop – the bridge where they started the whole bungy jumping thing. We watched a bloke jump and I obviously didn’t know him but I felt so nervous I felt sick!

Most of the journey was on very long straight roads and it turned out to be another lupin day! Mike said no more photos but it just got better and better so eventually we stopped by a small river that was totally carpeted by them in all colours ranging from pale pink to the deepest purple – beautiful!!!

We also took a 110 km diversion to see Mount Cook from the other side – only it was in cloud so we couldn’t see it.
Got to Lake Tekapo at about 4.30 so had a cuppa and then went exploring. There is a well known tiny church at the end of the road which attracts all the coach tours – the church of the Good Shepherd, it was shut when we got there so we’ll pop in and see it tomorrow before we leave (a Stafford recommendation). The area is also well known for clear skies and star gazing so we will check that out before bed! And yes the lake is really that colour, it can only be described at fluorescent turquoise caused by the rock flour in the glaciers reacting with the sunlight.

The temperature here has been up in the high 20s again today so we are really sympathetic for you all shivering in England – keep warm!
